  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 63.3 overs

    Leach c Smith b Lyon 13 (Eng 176-9)

Ollie Robinson uses his feet to nudge a single off Nathan Lyon to get Jack Leach back on strike.

However, Leach is unable to repeat his previous over and pokes at one outside off stump from Nathan Lyon and the ball brushes his bottom hand on the handle and it's an easy grab for Steve Smith at slip.

James Anderson on his way out to the middle.

Here's how Mark Wood perished not long ago as Scott Boland claimed his very first Test wicket.

  3. Eng 175-8published at 62.4 overs

Jack Leach has a Test best of 92, made at Lord's against Ireland so he's not a complete rabbit with the bat. If he and Ollie Robinson can somehow get England towards the 200 mark.

Mitchell Starc is bowling a testing line and length outside off stump, but when he straightens Leach's defence is good enough to dig keep him out.

The moment he hit that, he knew! He just walked away as if to say, have a bit of that!

  5. 6 runs

    Eng 170-8published at 61.3 overs

Jack Leach is off the mark with a huge swing of the willow to Nathan Lyon, but the ball plugs in the outfield at the MCG and the pair run two.

Next ball Leach uses his feet again and this time whacks a six over the top! Brilliant from the Somerset man.

A full 77 metres he's hit that. Well, that's brought some early morning cheer.

They'll just be taking it one ball at a time. The scoreboard is grim reading for England supporters.

  7. Eng 162-8published at 60.2 overs

Ollie Robinson, who has a run a ball 14, nudges a delivery from Mitchell Starc off his pads and the ball races away to fine before being cut off.

Normally, we'd be badge these as valuable lower order runs - but I think we'd just be kidding ourselves.

You've got to ask whether the pitch has contributed to the dismissals today. And for me, it's a yes and a no. Some of the shot selection has been poor.

  9. Eng 160-8published at 59.5 overs

Pat Cummins quickly gets Nathan Lyon back into the attack, backing his spinner to wrap things up by enticing England's batters to play their shots.

Jack Leach dances down the track to his fellow spinner but drills the ball to mid-on and there's no run.

Looking at Jack Leach I'm just not sure what kind of role he can play in this game. England simply won't have enough runs on the board for him to work with.

  11. Eng 159-8published at 59.0 overs

Jack Leach digs out a full straight one from Mitchell Starc then leaves well. How much can England's tail contribute here?

That was a nasty one from Starc but I don't think it got up as much as Bairstow was expecting. There has been some variable bounce today.

Bairstow ended up on his backside in the end. We've had an afternoon of extraordinary dismissals.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 58.4 overs

    Bairstow c Green b Starc 35 (Eng 159-8)

Jonny Bairstow plays a glorious cover drive off Mitchell Starc for four, but is gone next ball.

It's a bizarre dismissal as he loses his footing having been cramped for room and ends up spooning the ball via his glove to the bucket hands of Cameron Green at gully.

Bairstow briefly thought about a review but accepts his fate and is on his way.

  15. Eng 156-7published at 58.4 overs

Pat Cummins gives himself a breather and Mitchell Starc returns to the attack. Ollie Robinson is on the front off again, drives Starc first ball through mid-on, and he Jonny Bairstow scamper three.

Bairstow happy to put his faith in Robinson's batting thus far.

This is the ideal kind of bowling for Ollie Robinson - this pace and pitched up.

  17. Eng 150-7published at 57.3 overs

Scott Boland has a spring in his step as he bussles into the crease. He can sense a few England tailenders might be there for the taking.

He is a little too straight and full to Ollie Robinson, however, who drives him straight down the ground to give England a welcome boundary.

Robinson follows it up with a flamboyant flamingoian flick on one leg and they run three.

  18. Eng 142-7published at 57.0 overs

Jonny Bairstow has certainly looked comfortable at the crease today and used all his experience as a batter. It will be immensely frustrating for him if he's got in and then left high and dry.

Another disciplined over from Aussie skipper Pat Cummins with just one run taken from it.

It must be a depressing feeling for Bairstow to be left with the tail.

  20. Eng 141-7published at 56.0 overs

Ollie Robinson is the new man for England and he keeps out the final ball of Scott Boland's over.

Boland given an ovation by plenty of Victorians in the MCG down at fine leg and he has a big smile on his face.
