Has Joe Root reinjured an old spot?
Trail by 28
Yeeesh!
Joe Root has been hit in a rather delicate area again...
An absolutely vicious ball from Pat Cummins comes back in and cuts the England captain in half and hits him flush in the painful zone.
He's hopping and skipping all over the show.

Jonny Bairstow, please calm down.
He attempts to pull away, but is too early on the shot and the ball cannons into his left shoulder and, thankfully, drops to safety.
He then drops and runs into the on side. A very risky single.

Joe Root is once again carrying England. I hope they have a team chiropractor.

I've got an exhibit B for you too, Alex.
This is absolutely beautiful from Joe Root as he gloriously drives through the legs of Jonny Bairstow at the non-striker's end for another boundary.
That over was a perfect example of how to bat in Test cricket. Leave the good balls and pounce on the ones that are slightly full.

Exhibit A for you Alex.

Alex Thomas: Joe Root is the only man to carry us forward as captain of this team, and he’s in the form of his life… whatever the result here, he needs to show what being an England cricketer should look like. That is one thing I feel confident about seeing tonight.

Edged, but short. An early slice of luck for Jonny Bairstow.
He looks to get onto the front foot and defend Pat Cummins, but a fairly healthy edge drops well short of the cordon due to Bairstow's soft hands.

Starc does have the X factor. When he gets it wrong, it can be quite ugly, and I think that's where the criticism comes in. When he is on song he is as good as anyone in the world.

Joe Root picks up another single with a drop and run into the covers, before Jonny Bairstow gets off the mark with a couple off his hips.

Mitchell Starc seems to be more quickly doubted than the other Australia bowlers, but he is the one that has stood up.

Jonny Bairstow is solidly in behind his first delivery. Mitchell Starc was a little bit shorter than he would have liked there.
England need something special from the two Yorkshiremen at the crease...

That's definitely not what England wanted. Stokes was looking quite aggressive but the ball seamed back and kept low.

Stokes might have got a bit of bat on that but the result is the same. It cut back and rattled the middle stump.
Stokes b Starc 11 (Eng 46-5)
Ah.
A lovely bit of bowling from Mitchell Starc, this. He gets movement off the seam and it races through the defence of Ben Stokes and clips the top of middle stump.
It kept a little bit low too, and Stokes was just beaten by the movement and pace. He was almost leaning on the bat on the floor and he just gives his head a wry shake. Practically unplayable.
England still trail by 36.

I don't think it was overpitched - I think it was a bit of stand and deliver from Stokes.

Another four! England aren't just going to go into their shells when Starc overpitches.

Slapped! Stand and deliver cricket from Ben Stokes.
It is a decent length delivery from Mitchell Starc but the England all-rounder just dimessively whacks it back through mid-off.
He's up to 11 from 14.
