Joe Root plays out a maiden from Pat Cummins.
The England captain is moving well, and is being loud, assertive and confident with his calling.
There's already a slight sign of anger from Cummins as he sends down a bouncer, which Root does well to sway out the way of.

It looks like it. Stokes hit that well.

Are we playing on a different surface here today?

Oft! Lovely shot.
Ben Stokes stands motionless and just flows his arms through a quite simply beautiful on-drive.
The purest bit of timing you'll ever see.

No-one else would have got that ball. Cameron Green was at full stretch and he just plucked it out of the air.

Good fielding. Joe Root, in trademark style, looks to steer the ball down to third man but Cameron Green does brilliantly to dive across and prevent any runs.
I don't imagine it'll be too long before we see Green with ball in hand. He has got Root twice in this series already. Match-ups and all that.
Root lets the final ball go by, and Pat Cummins looks skywards as it skims relatively close to off stump.

This pitch has got a lot of life in it for the fast bowlers. The way Jimmy bowled yesterday was briliant. Another spell like that with a 100, 150-run lead...

Cummins strays onto the pads of Ben Stokes, and the England all-rounder flicks round the corner, down to fine leg, for a single.
It'll be Australia captain Pat Cummins from the other end.
He was utterly superb in his first spell last night, but didn't get any personal rewards.
That was from before play started, so Joe Root is now on 18 and needs 91 more runs to become the leading runscorer in a calendar year.
If he can do it England would have set Australia something...

That was a perfect off-drive.

Rooooot!
Lovely from the England captain.
He looks in really good rhythm and he beats mid-off to his left and the ball races away to the boundary.
First over safely negotiated.

England, and Joe Root, are up and running for the day.
The England captain gets on the back foot, high on his toes, and punches into the covers for a couple.
Trademark Root.

That was another of those rearing balls and Root went at it. That is the danger ball.
Offt! Beaten!
Wobble seam from Mitchell Starc and there is a little bit of extra bounce and it slides past the outside edge of a prodding Joe Root.
Nervy stuff.

It was exhausting and exhilarating watching Mitchell Starc last night.
Full from Mitchell Starc and a confident drive from Joe Root is stopped by a sprawling dive at mid-off.
The Barmy Army trumpet is blaring in the background.
The players are out in the middle, with England resuming on 31-4, still 51 runs behind.
It'll be captain Joe Root on strike, facing up to the left-arm pace of Mitchell Starc.
