  2. 'We can only apologise'published at 23:23 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2022

Ashley Giles has been speaking about the less-than-ideal way this tour has gone.

Giles, England's managing director, believes systemic change is needed, rather than replacing individuals.

"Being here now, in this position, I absolutely feel the responsibility of losing this Ashes series," Giles said.

"We all do. And we can only apologise and I know there will be a lot of emotion, a lot of anger about how we've lost it.

"But we know it's not an easy place to come. We can't kid ourselves; there's been a lot more gone on in the last two years than just performance."

I think England should just start every innings at 10-2 and save us all trying to act surprised when they lose wickets in the first 15 minutes.

My resolution to be more positive is going well, isn't it?

Mark Lane: Why don’t England try reversing the batting order, leaving just Root in his usual spot? Combined with several days of rain and regular thunderstorms, such audacious tactics could force a draw.

Joe Root is the only guaranteed pick in this England team - what else can do they captain wise?

The only way he won't be captain is if he chooses not to be, but I think his sense of duty will keep him in the job.

England captain Joe Root, speaking on Monday: "Whether it be putting pride back into the badge, whether it be making sure that we get Test Championship points, [and] for individuals making sure that they're pushing hard to cement their spots in the team.

"There's a huge amount to play for this group of players.

"We've got to stay tight, we've got to stay together. And we've got to put in a performance on one of the great Test venues in world cricket."

TMS just played an interview with Joe Root from earlier this week. He sounded absolutely exhausted.

Today will be his 60th Test in charge of England, passing the national record previously held by Sir Alastair Cook.

I hope, for his sake, someone else contributes to getting runs this year, rather than leaving it on his already worn out shoulders.

If England had made any changes to their batting line-up it would have been purely cosmetic - it wouldn't have changed. They need the players in the team to turn failure into success.

I'm sure there would have been some honest and back and forth with Ollie Robinson before he dropped out, but Stuart Broad seems the logical choice to come in.

I do think batting is a very different thing to being a bowler. You need a few games in a row rather than chopping and changing.

  10. 'Younger players need to show character'published at 23:09 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Ex-England spinner Monty Panesar, speaking about England's chances: "This Test is so crucial for a lot of the players . It could be a make or break moment for them. Joe Root is the template – he’s been unbelievable.

"There’s so many younger players that have a lot of potential. They need to show character and mental strength going into the summer, and this Test could help with that."

The ground staff will probably shave another little bit off that pitch this morning, but we'll have to see if that changes the colour of the pitch.

  15. Toss delayed; play to begin at 00:00published at 23:00 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2022

The toss has indeed been pushed back by half an hour, with play due to start at midnight.

That's roughly when it's meant to start raining again. Cricket.

Joe Root is having a couple of throwdowns in his training gear, which does suggest the toss will be delayed.

We already know the teams, with England bringing in Stuart Broad in place of Ollie Robinson.

Robinson, who has played in all three previous Tests, has a minor shoulder issue.

Meanwhile, Australia have called up Usman Khawaja, with Travis Head still isolating in Melbourne after testing positive for Covid-19.

Scott Boland, who took that astonishing 6-7 at the MCG, keeps his spot.

You've got to have a bowl on this pitch. Normally when the ground staff cut the first strip off the pitch you can see a noticeable difference but you can't see that - it isn't changing colour.

With the fact that you're likely to be on and off for rain that is easier for bowlers. Everything points to bowling this morning.

There is already an absolutely cracking Test going on in New Zealand, with Bangladesh on the verge of a brilliant win over the world champions.

    The scorecard is over here.
