It's four overs until the new ball which will be taken after the break, so James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Mark Wood will be able to recuperate a bit.

  2. Aus 202-3published at 76 overs

To be fair to Dawid Malan, he only concedes three from his first over.

Dawid Malan is a competent leg-spinner. He's consistent and will be at the stumps.

  4. Postpublished at 01:24 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Oh good, Dawid Malan is on for a bowl.

Geoff (Lemon), I have heard you have size 16 UK feet. They're some of the biggest feet I have ever heard of.

  6. Aus 200-3published at 75 overs

Usman Khawaja unfurls a lovely, well-timed drive, and brings up Australia's 200 in the process.

  7. Postpublished at 01:21 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

    Oh, England.

  8. Aus 197-3published at 74 overs

There's lots of hands on hips and folded arms from the England fielders.

Mark Wood tries to raise spirits with a sharp bouncer that whistles past Usman Khawaja's grille.

  9. Postpublished at 01:16 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Mark Wood is on in place of Ben Stokes.

Jack Rule: Oh No! Not Stokes, of all people please not Stokes. England really are getting no luck today.

Trying to bowl like that with a ball which is 70 overs old, and trying to make something happen, it's such a Ben Stokes thing to do. It's hard to do for anyone, never mind after 12 months out of the game.

  12. Aus 195-3published at 73 overs

Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja milk Jack Leach for a series of singles.

A dropped catch and an injury in the space of about two minutes. Ouch.

My side went in a Test match in South Africa, and you know as a bowler you're in strife. It's a sad sight for England watching Ben walk off like that.

  14. Postpublished at 01:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Well, the short ball tactic has got rid of someone. Unfortunately it's the bowler rather than the batters.

It's grim. Really, really grim. Side injuries are horrible.

  15. Aus 191-3published at 72 overs

Stokes was holding his side at the end of his last over but he persevered.

It's not good, though. His hand went straight to it and he barely consulted with Joe Root, just turned and walked off. And someone as competitive as Ben Stokes would have to be dragged off the field.

  16. ouch!

Stokes leaves field with injurypublished at 01:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

How has it gone from bad to worse for England in the space of one minute?

Ben Stokes is clutching his side and he's off. He can't finish the over.

  17. Aus 190-3published at 71.5 overs

Well, if one of England's New Year resolutions was to not drop catches...

It does feel like England have dropped an awful lot of chances in this series.

It went through to Joe Root who juggled but couldn't hold on. It wasn't easy, but it was a genuine edge. It wasn't a keeper's catch because there was too much on it. Root was slightly wrong footed. Jack Leach was so close to a wicket there. People will see the replay and say 'Root should have taken that' but the moment it takes a deflection it's tough.

  19. Aus 189-3published at 71 overs

That deflection off Jos Buttler wrongfooted Joe Root - I think it's flicked Buttler's elbow and then hip, and Root couldn't react quick enough.

Leach's face, though. He could barely look.

  20. dropped catch

Khawaja dropped on 28published at 01:05 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Oh. Oh no. Oh, poor Jack Leach.

Leach can barely look as he finds the end of Usman Khawaja's bat, the ball deflects slightly off Jos Buttler and Joe Root, at slip, gets both hands to it before parrying the ball down to the ground.
