Australia will come at England hard tomorrow.

They weren't at their best in that five-over spell at the end of the day - they bowled too many balls that England could leave alone - but it would be a surprise if they did that tomorrow.

Can one or two England batters stick their hands up and really apply themselves?

  2. Postpublished at 08:26 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

England will resume on 13-0 when play starts against at 23:00 GMT on Thursday night. That means they are 403 runs behind Australia.

The first target - and one you would think simply must happen if they are to stand any chance of avoiding going 4-0 down - is to get to 217 and avoid the follow-on.

    Can they do it?

  3. Postpublished at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

England managed to survive a tricky little five-over period at the end of the day. Just.

Zak Crawley was caught in the slips off Mitchell Starc without scoring, but the Aussie quick had overstepped and the England opener survived.

    Can he capitalise tomorrow?

  4. 'I can guarantee you I was as fired up as I've always been'published at 08:21 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

    BBC Test Match Special

More from Stuart Broad: "Naturally when you're not playing your mind starts thinking all sorts and you think about how it will feel to play again and whether I'll have that drive but I can guarantee you with the ball in hand, bowling at Davey Warner, I was as emotional and as fired up as I've always been when I've played against him and Australia.

"I've really enjoyed being a part of this innings and this Test match so far - it is an awesome ground to play at. It is pretty special to join the honours board with my dad from 1986/87 - that is quite nice. I wish it was for less than 100 but beggars can't be choosers!".

  6. 'I felt like I bowled OK'published at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

    BBC Test Match Special

More from Stuart Broad: "I was disappointed to miss out at Brisbane and Melbourne on pitches that any wobble-seam bowler would have been pretty excited about. But when you do miss out your mentality has to be about get yourself ready for the next opportunity and I really feel like I did that. Melbourne was a bit of a carnage for us with Covid tests and positive tests but I managed to get as much out of it as I could and I arrived here with two nets in the middle which was great for us.

"As a bowler I love bowling in the middle when you can before the game and I felt in really good rhythm in the nets. I was just hoping for an opportunity and Ollie Robinson had a bit of a sore shoulder and didn't feel like he'd be able to get through the game and that was my opportunity. Experience and having played a long time lets you settle pretty quickly, despite obviously there always being nerves around, but I felt like I bowled OK. It could have been better.

"I feel like Mark Wood deserved a lot more out of the innings but his time will come. Whether it is Hobart or here he'll get five for nothing at some stage because he deserves it and is bowling really well."

  8. 'Australia's day but we're still in this game'published at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

    BBC Test Match Special

England bowler Stuart Broad, who took 5-101, on Test Match Special: "It was Australia's day no doubt about it. I thought that Khawaja played beautifully. He gave us one chance that we didn't manage to grab hold of.

"I think any time you manage to get 400 you probably own that innings but on the other side of that I thought our bowlers ran in really well. We kept fighting and Test cricket is about showing heart and character and I don't think we can doubt any of that today.

"We're disappointed that Australia got 400 but we're also aware that in the last five years the average first-innings score is 450-odd.

"We're still in this game and it makes tomorrow a really important today. We always think day three is a really important day in Test cricket but it is a good opportunity for a batting group that hasn't stamped their authority on this trip to do it."

Will England be left to rue more missed chances though?

Usman Khawaja was dropped on 28, before going on to make 137.

There was an opportunity for England to bowl Australia out for 300 odd and then get a first innings lead. You can sense the frustration England allowed Australia from being six down to getting a good score on the board.

  11. 'Every time I play for Australia is special'published at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

More from Usman Khawaja: "It's special scoring my first Test hundred as a father. I was trying to look for my wife and daughter. I saw them on the big screen but didn't know where they were sitting! I couldn't find them. I am really blessed. I am humbled, and lost for words and grateful.

"Every time I play for Australia is special. The only thing to make it better will be to get a victory and that's the next thing to go for.

"The celebration? I was so excited! I love Lebron James and I do it mucking around with the boys all the time. If I hit a few good shots playing basketball I do it so I've had a bit of practice at it. I love Test cricket. I feels a little traditional at times so I like to give it a bit of spark."

  12. 'I am enjoying life'published at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Australia centurion Usman Khawaja: "It's pretty sweet moment. I wasn't expecting it. Hundreds don't come every day and it's a pretty tough wicket. I was just trying to bat, and grind away. It was a lot of fun. I am a bit lost of words and a little tired.

"I didn't doubt my ability at 35. I've been in a good spot the past few years after I got dropped. My wife and family have been very supportive. I haven't got anything to prove, not to myself nor anyone else. I love playing cricket whether it's at my local club or Queensland. I'm just loving the game.

"Getting selected for Australia is a bonus for me. I am enjoying my life at the moment. I was so relieved when Pat got me back on strike at 99 - I didn't want to be stuck on that over tea!"

I have seen 35-year-old players return to Test cricket and they are frantic thinking this could be their last chance. He averages 41 in Test matches which is more than every other England player apart from Joe Root. There was something so clam and serene about him.

I think the pressure was off Usman Khawaja after Travis Head got Covid. If he fails then Head comes back. It's an unexpected bonus and has been scoring runs in the Sheffield Shield. He played with freedom and a man who was care free who enjoyed an unexpected chance.

  15. Postpublished at 07:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 January 2022

Day two was undoubtedly dominated by Usman Khawaja, though.

The 35-year-old is playing his first Test since being dropped during the 2019 Ashes series in England. He is only in the side for this Test because of Travis Head testing positive for Covid.

Khawaja was brilliant. He batted with discipline, rotated the strike well and put the bad balls away. He thoroughly deserved his ninth Test century.

Here is that BIG moment from that five-over period that England survived - Zak Crawley surviving edging to slip because of Mitchell Starc overstepping.

Can Crawley make the most of this extra life?

This is not a flat pitch. To see one or two balls from Pat Cummins flying off a length shows it's not flat. I have never seen a pitch get better with cracks. I was surprised Australia declared because of the value of first-innings runs.
