If Stuart Broad gets some wickets in this Test it creates a dilemma with selection and rotation. Ollie Robinson, a little sore and tired after back-to-back Tests, missed out here having been an automatic pick. England need the pace of Mark Wood and the wizardry of James Anderson so it's up to Broad to take this opportunity. I've been on both sides of it.

    Right, here come the players.

Steve Smith is unbeaten on six with home favourite Usman Khawaja alongside him on four.

It's a bit grey overhead but, crucially, it's dry.

Jack Leach bowled quite nicely yesterday during the brief interlude where it wasn't raining.

Mark Wood was the pick for me - fast, hostile and used in short bursts for maximum effect.

Underneath the pitch it is hard and cracked but on top there is grass to hold it all together which means you saw carry yesterday. But it will go whiter with more sun on it and the cracks will open up and spin will come into play the back end of the game.

  5. 'If we start well we're in the game'published at 22:52 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January 2022

England bowler Mark Wood, who dismissed Marnus Labuschagne on day one: "Everybody has had to muck in, so we've had to put up with it.

"It's not been great, we're 3-0 down, but we're trying to show as much fight as we can.

"To put the two wickets on changes the perception of the game. If we can start well tomorrow I'll feel like we're right in the game.

"It's a big morning. Steve Smith is a massive wicket for any team. If we can get him early it puts us amongst it."

It is an oppressively humid day here. It was frustrating day for England yesterday going on and off. They would have wanted a couple more wickets but will be fairly happy with where they start today.

Australia batter David Warner, speaking yesterday: "That's Sydney weather for you. It rains pretty much every Test we play here. We were surprised with how much play we got.

"We were always going to bat. There are quite a lot of cracks underneath the surface. We wanted to be the ones bowling last."
