    Stokes lbw b Lyon 66 (Eng 164-5)

    Booo!

Nathan Lyon gets one to scurry through, slightly quicker, and it beats Ben Stokes for pace and he is hit on the pad, and it is absolutely plumb. It was crashing into middle stump.

What an innings though for Ben Stokes. He has wrestled some pride and hope back for England, all while majorly struggling with a side injury. He's grimaced his way to 66.

Tony: Stokes & Bairstow restoring some pride. Only problem is I’m awake now & watching, so they're bound to get out.

  3. 6 runs

    Eng 161-4published at 50.1 overs

Anything Ben Stokes can do, Jonny Bairstow can do.

He slog sweeps Nathan Lyon for six over mid-wicket.

England are attacking Lyon. His figures are 0-48 off 7.1 overs.

That was a bit of a slog. Stokes is making his intentions clear.

Ben Stokes is just going to play his shots now I think.

He attempts a big booming drive - that might be a bit kind, it was more of a slash - off Pat Cummins.

He skies it, but it is safe and he picks up a couple to move to 66.

It's wonderful intent from Ben Stokes, and it's not reckless at all.

  7. 6 runs

    Eng 152-4published at 49 overs

Oh my! Ben Stokes is playing with half a body, but what an innings this is becoming.

He takes a step down the track to Nathan Lyon and goes in to out and creams a drive over the covers for six.

    What a shot.

  8. 50 runs

50 for Jonny Bairstowpublished at 05:43 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2022

    Well batted, Jonny Bairstow.

The Yorkshireman needed a score today and he's got a half-century off 80 balls.

He's got to keep going now.

Shotttt! Ben Stokes picks up another boundary with a slog sweep over square leg. He then gingerly gets back to his feet. Will this innings be doing more damage to his side I wonder?

if it is, is it the right thing to keep him out there? I'd probably say not.

It has been a very courageous innings from Ben Stokes so far.

He is evidently really struggling with this side injury, but he is battling on through.

Here are the best shots from his half-century.

  11. Eng 140-4published at 48 overs

Ben Stokes keeps the strike with a single out to deep point, but it is streaky. He drives but it flies off the edge and through where gully would have been - it probably would have gone over gully's head to be fair.

  12. ouch!

    Eng 139-4published at 47.3 overs

    Another bruise for Ben Stokes.

Pat Cummins bangs one in shorter, but it doesn't quite get up as high as Stokes expects and it thuds into his right shoulder.

He's absolutely fine, though. He barely even flinches.

It will be captain Pat Cummins from the other end.

I can confirm I will 100% not be doing this session outside or topless. Jumper, dressing gown and blanket is more accurate.

I'm more looking for tips on how to sleep when I'm done in a few hours, rather than how to stay awake now.

Riley: Callum, drink 10 coffees and eat 10 weetabix in order to stay awake. Maybe, go outside topless and do commentary in the freezing cold to wake you up!

  16. Eng 138-4published at 47 overs

Oh! Almost genius from Steve Smith.

Jonny Bairstow gets down very early, and looks to play a premeditated paddle round the corner.

Smith, who is at slip, reads it and starts to run behind Alex Carey and flies through the air but can't quite reach it. It would have been brilliant.

That is the 100 partnership too. Bairstow and Ben Stokes have batted really well so far.

The players are back out in the middle.

The scheduled close is 07:00 GMT but we still have 32 overs left, so we'll be going until 07:30.

It'll be the spin of Nathan Lyon to start after the interval.

It has been a proper battle today - particularly in the morning session.

    Just ask Zak Crawley.

He was hit in the box and on the hand before pulling Mitchell Starc for four all in the same over.

It was some classic Test match theatre.

Andy Kerr: Stokes batting through the pain is reminding me of when I watched Graham Thorpe hit a century against WI at Old Trafford in 2004. Why? Because Thorpe had a broken finger when on about six runs, and still scored his century. Tough sport, cricket…

What can you really say about Ben Stokes?

He has been in clear discomfort with this side injury throughout this innings but he has played a really good counter-attacking innings to be 52 not out at tea.

He did have this huge slice of luck when Cameron Green rattled one into his off stump, but the bails didn't come off.
