Australia haven't been infallible, though, with two dropped catches, including one of Ben Stokes shortly before lunch.

As good as Crawley's knock was, England have still lost three wickets this morning, and need to see out a minimum of 63 overs if they are going to save this Test.

Zak Crawley played absolutely magnificently for his 77 this morning.

It came along at a rapid pace, too, with Crawley hitting 13 fours in his 100-ball knock before he was trapped lbw by Cameron Green.

I enjoyed this earlier - Sheldon Cotterell left his car in the wrong place when teammate Odean Smith hit a six against Ireland in the recent ODI win.

I'm just looking skywards and it is very grey to the right of us where the rain has been coming from.

  8. Postpublished at 01:38 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2022

    Cheers, Callum.

It looks to me like it is about to absolutely hose down at the SCG, but I've thought that pretty much every day of this Test.

  9. Postpublished at 01:37 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2022

The ground staff are showing no signs of being worried about the rain. They are just out doing work on the pitch at the moment.

To take you through lunch and then the afternoon session, or a period of rain, will be Amy Lofthouse.

Is the rain going to come?

Aggers says his radar suggests we may get a shower during the lunch interval. It is certainly quite cloudy, but they don't look too threatening.

England may be dancing in the changing room and hoping for more than a shower.

Lunch at the SCG. England are 122-3.

They were 92-3 in that session with Haseeb Hameed, Dawid Malan and Zak Crawley the men to fall.

They had batted for 35 overs in that session. That means there are 63 left in the day.

Time for one more over before lunch.

It is imperative that Ben Stokes and Joe Root survive.

That's one of those that you're really lucky if it sticks. Harris couldn't quite do that.

  14. dropped catch

Stokes dropped on 16published at 44.5 overs

    Could this prove costly?

Ben Stokes goes back, deep in his crease, as a Pat Cummins delivery rises. The England all-rounder nudges away and it is in the direction of Marcus Harris at short leg. He gets his hands to it, but it is one of those that sticks or pops out, and thankfully for England it is the latter.

  15. Eng 121-3published at 44.4 overs

Joe Root edges the following ball into his pads, before getting down the other end with a pull down to fine leg.

Ben Stokes then picks up four more with a thudding pull shot. Lovely.

Oh, no. Joe Root has been hit in the delicate area again.

How many times is that in the series now? At least three.

He isn't completely floored this time. It is more a crouch, walk away, come back, another crouch, deep breath.

I bet he can't wait to get back to his sofa in Yorkshire.

    A maiden from Nathan Lyon.

33 overs gone today. There are 65 left in the day.

That's a handsome shot from Joe Root. He had time and acres of space.

  20. Eng 115-3published at 43 overs

    Root 11, Stokes 12

Shot! Joe Root picks up his second boundary with a pull to the square leg boundary.

There isn't even a tiny smile on Root's race. Just a steely determination and a remarking of his guard.

Eight minutes till lunch - with Nathan Lyon bowling we'll probably get three more overs.
