We are seeing some dark clouds moving towards us, but they do look more threatening on television than from where we are sitting in the SCG. On TV, they look like some kind of dark, threatening battleship which is about to take over the skies.

There are only 6.2km between Bondi Beach and SCG, apparently.

Geoff Lemon doesn't necessarily share Roberto's thoughts though...

Roberto: Big black storm clouds heading over from Bondi Beach… please reach the SCG IN time (from your Sydney-based weather person).

  4. Eng 109-3published at 42 overs

    Root 6, Stokes 12

Ben Stokes drives Nathan Lyon down the ground and picks up a couple after Lyon and Pat Cummins aren't able to get down and stop the ball.

There are 67 overs left in the day.

  5. Postpublished at 01:15 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2022

Here's the latest example of Cameron Green dismissing a set top-order batter.

You really can't blame Zak Crawley here.

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Most of Cameron Green's wickets in this series have been top-order batsmen who have been well set in their innings. It's such a great asset to have.

  7. Eng 107-3published at 41 overs

Successive maidens from Pat Cummins to Joe Root.

England won't mind that. Tick off the balls and overs.

There are 16 minutes until lunch. We'll probably see four more overs.

You wonder how long Ben Stokes can resist the urge to pop one over the top - that slog-sweep, loft one over cover etc...

  9. Eng 107-3published at 40 overs

    Root 6, Stokes 10

    Shot!

Ben Stokes goes down on one knee and slog-sweeps over square leg for a one-bounce four.

Surely he is not going to do something ridiculous today? I genuinely thought Joe Root was going to have to help him back to his feet for a second there.

Harry: Binbagjez at 00:55, its not irresponsible, being positive and scoring runs is the best way to survive but sometimes you just have to say well bowled...

  11. Eng 103-3published at 39 overs

    Root 6, Stokes 6

Pat Cummins returns and sends down a maiden to Joe Root. The England skipper is almost hit in that delicate area again, but he'll have to go through the pain of a bruise on the inner thigh instead.

England have batted for 28 overs today. There are 70 left.

  12. Postpublished at 01:06 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2022

    Alex Hartley
England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

Ben Stokes is a true competitor and will want to be out there, but I hope he's not doing more damage to his side by being out there.

  13. How's stat?!published at 01:05 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

Lyon has bowled 112 deliveries to Joe Root in this series, and his figures are 0-64.

  14. Eng 103-3published at 38 overs

I've just worked out that I missed an over from Nathan Lyon. Sorry.

He came back on for Scott Boland and whizzed through one after the Zak Crawley wicket.

He continues and Joe Root takes a single from the over.

Ben Stokes strikes me as the kind of player who would relish the challenge of batting injured. He can channel the pain into something useful.

George Speakman: A 200-run partnership from Stokes and Root in the next 40 overs and we're right back in this game.

  17. Eng 102-3published at 37 overs

Steve Smith, who is Australia's vice captain, decides to change his fielding position to a leg gully almost.

Cameron Green isn't happy about that. He walks up to Pat Cummins and tells him to move Smith back to leg slip. Rate it.

Ben Stokes gets forward on the defence and an inside edge flicks off the thigh pad and just past Marcus Harris at short leg. He reacts, but he can't get his hand down towards his left knee quickly enough to take the catch.

  18. Postpublished at 00:58 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2022

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Crawley was imperious in that innings, the way he latched onto length.

The run map shows Zak Crawley scored 77 with 13 fours, 2 threes, 2 twos, and 15 singles for England
  19. Postpublished at 00:56 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2022

I am really excited to see the thumbs down on that post.

Crawley didn't play a shot in anger. He just latched onto any length extremely well.

BinBagJez: Controversial opinion, but it wasn't a 'great' Crawley innings. He was seeing it well, and in form. To only see 99 balls off and have such a high strike-rate is irresponsible when realistically England are going for the draw.
