    Root 5, Stokes 4

Ben Stokes is really struggling here. I'm on grimace watch and we're on two or three already.

It is whenever he plays a drive at the minute. I mean, it doesn't stop him playing an absolutely glorious straight drive away to the boundary. A lovely shot.

It is extremely unlikely Stokes will be playing in Hobart, surely. Considering it is a similar injury to the one that Josh Hazlewood picked up in the first Test and he has missed the next three and has been ruled out of Hobart.

Grant: That’s a pearler of a delivery from Green. Absolutely fantastic yorker.

  6. Eng 96-3published at 34 overs

As he trudged off there Zak Crawley waved his bat through the air in frustration. It's understandable, but he should be pleased with the way he has played today, and he didn't throw it away. It was a good delivery from Cameron Green that got him.

Joe Root plays out a maiden from Scott Boland. It is over to him and Ben Stokes to save England now though. They have faced 23 overs today, so there are 75 left in the day.

    Steven Finn
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

He has been the only England player to look fluent. It was a wonderful piece of bowling from Cameron Green, though, the perfect yorker. Crawley knew he was in trouble as soon as it hit him. It was a desperate review.

Zak Crawley did play extremely well. It was a very fine innings. He's disappointed he hasn't got a hundred but that will confirm the return of Crawley to the top of England's order.

    Crawley lbw b Green 77 (Eng 96-3)

Red. Red. Red. Zak Crawley is gone.

That is a real shame because Crawley had played beautifully today.

As Steven Finn said, the fuller length delivery - almost yorker length - seems to catch him by surprise. It hits him almost flush on the toe and would have been crashing into the base of middle stump.

A very encouraging innings from Crawley, though. That will bookmark him in the team for a while.

There's an ominous feel to this.

    There's definitely no bat.

I think Crawley is going to be gone here.

The only hope is he got some bat on it, but if he had he would have reviewed straight away.

It was as though he wasn't expecting a full delivery.

  14. England reviewpublished at 00:43 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2022

    Oh, no.

Zak Crawley has been given out lbw after a full, straight delivery from Cameron Green.

It looks extremely good, and it is almost a resigned review from Crawley and England.

Root has a big smile on his face.

  17. Eng 95-2published at 32.2 overs

Joe Root is off the pair. Cameron Green sends one down the leg side and Root flicks it fine and away to the fence.

Let's hope his record - mentioned by Dean Wilson five posts down - continues today. It would be a good time to get that first century in Australia, wouldn't it?

Crawley is playing so smoothly. Given the situation England are in, he is playing very fluently indeed. It's a really good innings.

  20. Eng 91-2published at 32 overs

    Four more for Zak Crawley.

His stature is helping him here. The bounce is pleasant for him, because it makes the ball sit up.

He picks up his latest boundary - his 13th of the innings - with a whip off his hips.
