James Anderson supposedly has a little niggle so that is why he has been left out. With the green pitch and overhead conditions Jack Leach's absence also makes sense and Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow miss out through injury.

The big call is replacing Haseeb Hameed with Rory Burns at the top of the order. Hameed does have six successive single-figure scores in the series now, but is it him or Burns that England want to invest in?

They can't keep making changes. Changing your opening pair twice in a five-Test series is simply chaotic.

I'm a big fan of Sam Billings. I like his attitude and the way he goes about his business. I think he'll do well.

  6. Postpublished at 04:17 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

Sam Billings becomes the 700th man to play Test cricket for England tonight.

He's been a regular in the ODI and T20 squads over the last few years, but has rarely featured in the thinking for Test cricket.

The Kent keeper has been playing in Australia's Big Bash League so was in the country when Jos Buttler suffered his finger injury.

Here are his first-class stats. He is a regular in T20 competitions around the world, and as such he's only had 17 red-ball innings since the start of 2019. He averages 36 in that time with three centuries.

The last three pitches - in Melbourne, Sydney and here - have made me want to pull my boots on again. The problem here is if you bowl really well and knock a team over, guess what, you have to bat under lights.

It feels like a very good toss. The pitch looks like the ball will move around off the seam, as well as in the air. The England bowlers will be looking to bowl the correct length.

  11. 'Hard to ignore Khawaja'published at 04:09 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "We would probably have had a bowl, but I'm not too upset.

"We had a lot of fun in Sydney. Davey and Uzzy are like old chums - it's a cool story for them to open the batting.

"It's really tough on Marcus Harris, but when Uzzy knocked down the door in Sydney, it was hard to ignore."

Play will start at 04:30 GMT, by the way, assuming we have no more rain.

The groundstaff have rolled up the woven sheets that they use to cover the pitch so that is an encouraging sign.

  13. 'A nice opportunity to bowl first'published at 04:05 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

England captain Joe Root: "With overhead conditions, slightly tacky nature to the surface, it's a nice opportunity to bowl first.

"We've got five days of hard cricket to give a really good account of ourselves. We have to take that opportunity.

"It was very important that we got something from Sydney. The way we went about it on the last day was brilliant."

  14. Postpublished at 04:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

Quite remarkable that Ben Stokes plays in this Test considering the pain he was batting through in Sydney last week.

Let's hope he has recovered and doesn't make things worse and cause a long-term lay-off this week.

  15. Postpublished at 04:02 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2022

    England have made FIVE changes.

IN: Rory Burns, Ollie Pope, Sam Billings, Chris Woakes and Ollie Robinson.

OUT: Haseeb Hameed, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, James Anderson and Jack Leach.

    Full teams to follow.

Joe Root was very low key when he spoke the other day. I hope he has perked up a bit.

I wonder if he wanted to keep things in perspective after the draw in Sydney.

Joe Root is pacing around with his England blazer on.

He is ready for the toss but is waiting for Pat Cummins and the match officials.

It is cricket, don't forget. The toss is scheduled for 04:00 GMT so it will take place then and not a single second earlier.

If Jimmy Anderson is fit and you look at the pitch and the sky, why on earth isn't he playing?
