  1. Eng 41-3published at 8 overs

    Buttler 20, Morgan 4

Four singles come off Maheesh Theekshana's second over.

The umpire has a little word with the Sri Lanka spinner for encroaching onto the danger zone. It is just a polite word at this stage.

Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan seem happy to rebuild at the moment. Lay a platform and allow Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali to attack at the end.

There was a little bit of a grimace there from Buttler after the final ball of the over. He was through his shot too early.

  4. Eng 37-3published at 7 overs

It is extremely hard to imagine England dropping Dawid Malan during this tournament. The only batter not playing today is Sam Billings. If he came in England would need to change their order completely and have either Jonny Bairstow or Moeen Ali at three probably.

England, under Eoin Morgan, don't just rip up plans like that. Their trust and faith in players won them the 50-over World Cup in 2019 despite a less than ideal group stage. I can't imagine them straying too far from that.

Just a single from the seventh. Scoring looks very difficult.

Gareth Thomas: Come on, get Malan out of the squad. He has been absolutely terrible lately for England. How can anyone deny that?

This is intriguing. England, for the first time in this tournament, find themselves under pressure.

  9. Eng 36-3published at 6 overs

England skipper Eoin Morgan is the new batter. He had an absolutely torrid time with the bat in the Indian Premier League recently so is in far from ideal form.

He has quite a long time here, though. He can afford to build an innings.

The end of the powerplay. Sri Lanka have won that.

Bairstow likes pace on the ball and he likes to set the tone, rather than walking into a situation. It is really different to open the batting compared to walking out in the middle order. When you open, you can go in and play the same way every time.

A golden duck for Jonny Bairstow! That was a good review.

    Absolutely crashing into leg stump!

Jonny Bairstow, who is usually such a good player of spin, is out first ball.

He came a little bit down the pitch and just tried to nudge into the leg-side for a single but the ball grips slightly away from him and into the pad.

Sri Lanka are on top here. England's unexposed middle order have got work to do.

  16. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 5.2 overs

Has Jonny Bairstow been trapped lbw, just looking to defend into the on-side.

The umpire says no, but Sri Lanka send it upstairs.

    This could be very close.

Jonny Bairstow is the new batter.

Wanindu Hasaranga will bowl the final over of the powerplay.

There's a statistic that if you lose three wickets in the six-over powerplay it is tricky to win in T20 cricket. England will be aware of that.

It's a smart move to come around the wicket and fire in at the stumps on this low Sharjah wicket. Chameera has bowled well and deserved that.
