  2. Eng 138-3published at 17.3 overs

Moeen drags a full, wide delivery to mid-on for a single. Livingstone takes one more to short fine leg.

    Ooft, he hit that well...

  4. 6 runs

    Eng 136-3published at 17.1 overs

Crunch! Moeen Ali steadies himself and swats Adam Milne for six.

  5. Eng 130-3published at 17 overs

Moeen advances to the bowler again, taking two down at deep square leg. And then a single to end the over.

England take 11 from the over. Nicely done from Sodhi after conceding that six.

These next three overs are so significant for the state of this game.

  7. Eng 127-3published at 16.1 overs

Moeen dances down the track and launches Sodhi for a big six over mid-wicket. And I say it is all down to James' 15:11 GMT entry.

I'm sure the England cricket team, inexperienced and unsuccessful at this level as they are, will latch on to James' tactical acumen (15:11) like a drowning man grabbing a rope. Can't we get him on Mastermind - specialist subject, the bleeding obvious? (with acknowledgements to John Cleese)

There's been a lot of mistiming in this innings. The ball doesn't seem to be coming on terribly easily.

  10. Eng 119-3published at 16 overs

Both Moeen and Livingstone mistime their shots. All of England's batters have struggled with their timing on this pitch.

  11. Eng 117-3published at 15.3 overs

There will be many England fans pleased to hear that it is indeed Liam Livingstone who comes in next. He's off the mark with a single.

It has to be Liam Livingstone in next.

That's the end of Malan, just as he was looking to get a bit of rhythm and get going.

    Malan c Conway b Southee 41 (Eng 116-3)

Six and out! It's another short ball from Tim Southee and Malan goes goes another swing to the leg side. It takes the faintest of edges and is caught behind.

A solid innings comes to an end. Malan has done a job for England.

That was very nonchalantly taken by Tim Seifert behind the boundary rope!

  16. Eng 116-2published at 15.1 overs

That's a great catch... from sub Tim Seifert on the boundary edge as Malan clears the leg-side boundary for six!

This is where England can motor on. These five overs will be big. New Zealand only have one over left of Southee and one of Boult.

  18. Eng 110-2published at 15 overs

Nice! Moeen clips off the pads for four. T

en from the over and England have clearly upped their intensity.

Mike Connolly: I'd give my left [insert appendage here] to see a six.

  20. Eng 102-2published at 14.2 overs

Moeen listened to you, James. He swings hard and chips the ball high but not far. Tim Southee, running in from the deep, tries to make ground but it falls just short.
