I don't think this will have any bearing on the Ashes but I think it will make a big difference to boys and girls in Australia and will hopefully bring some youth into the game.

It is nice to see a team with such a rich pedigree in terms of players, who a horrible record as a team, come out and win a T20 World Cup.

More from Aaron Finch: "David Warner has been outstanding. I can't believe that people wrote him off a few weeks ago and said he was done. That is when he plays his best cricket - it was almost like poking the bear. He was outstanding.

"What a tournament Adam Zampa had too - he was player of the tournament for me. He controlled the innings for us and took wickets. He is a super player.

"What a way for Mitch Marsh to start his innings today. He came out and put so much pressure on New Zealand from the start. He was outstanding."

Australia captain Aaron Finch: "It is a huge honour to be able to lead this Australia team. I'm so proud of the way the guys went about it from the start - they were brilliant. I'm so proud.

"We knew our backs were against the wall going into the Bangladesh game but if you keep putting peoples backs against the wall enough they are going to fight. We certainly did that. We had some great team and great individual performances. It was fantastic."

Australia are enjoying their celebrations, complete with champagne, fireworks and party streamers.

Genuinely, I couldn't find anyone who thought they would even get out of their group, let alone go on to win the whole thing.

The humility of Kane Williamson is something to behold.

This class tonight when the chips were down and he managed to put what felt like a good total down. It showed the true character of the man.

  9. 'We're feeling this one'published at 18:06 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2021

More from Kane Williamson: "Australia are a team full of amazing players. Today they really turned it on.

"We finish this campaign and such is life in the international schedule is you move your focus. No doubt we're feeling this one a little bit.

"We had high hopes coming into the game. It's never nice. You sign up to these sort of things. It's just a shame we couldn't get the job done tonight."

  10. 'Australia did not give us an inch'published at 18:05 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2021

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "We were trying to get a bit of a platform and the surface was holding a platform. We got what we thought at the halfway stage was a good total, but it was chased superbly by Australia.

"We made every effort to get a good total. Guys came out and committed to their plans. We weren't far away but having said that, credit to the way Australia chased that total. They did not give us an inch.

"I'm really proud of our team's efforts throughout the tournament. We came here and gave it our best shot, but it wasn't good enough tonight."

Player of the tournament David Warner, who scored 289 runs: "I always felt really well. I didn't get much time in the middle in the practice matches but it was about going back to basics and getting on some hard synthetic wickets and get hitting balls. I managed to do that and then I scored runs.

"This is definitely up there with 2015. Being part of the 2010 defeat to England hurt but the women winning made us a feel a bit of that. These guys are a great bunch of guys. We've got a great support staff and support around the world."

    He's had one almighty turnaround.

Player of the match Mitchell Marsh, who made 77 not out from 50 balls: "I feel like a lot of people say this but I don't really have words right now. What an amazing six weeks with this group of men. I love them to death and now we're world champs.

"I just love playing for this team. I just wanted to get out there and have a presence, which big Marcus Stoinis always talks to me about. I can't believe it. It's unbelievable."
