Australia had a terrible lead in really. They had a splintered squad with some players in the IPL and some at home. They had border closures and there were all sorts of problems with getting the squad together.

They were written off and a horrible year on the road. They have bobbled together the squad and had barely played any cricket together. They started quite poorly but found a way to win and then came to form in the final couple of games. It has been a remarkable turnaround and a great team effort.

A word for Glenn Maxwell, who was near tears as Aaron Finch, his former housemate, came running over to hug him.

He has not had an easy time of it in an Australia shirt. He was brilliant tonight.

It's another World Cup final defeat for New Zealand.

A wonderful knock by Kane Williamson, but it always felt like they were 20 or so runs short. The slow start - and Josh Hazlewood's brilliance, frankly - cost them.

Mitchell Marsh is absolutely exhausted. What a stunning knock, on the biggest stage of all.

He finishes with an unbeaten 77 from 50 balls, with a pleasing six fours and four sixes.

His best mates Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis are the first people on the pitch to congratulate him.

You would say that is an absolute pasting. Australia cruised there.

Well played, Australia. They have done it at an absolute breeze.

That is a celebration of a team that are a bit annoyed that they were written off. There were some clenched fists and "come on" there.

Ah yes, Australia. The men's T20 champions we all predicted.

A side who lost five series in a row coming into this, got bowled out for 62 the month before the tournament, looked in dreadful nick when they arrived and had an opener who couldn't score a run.

Ridiculous, ridiculous sport and a lesson in peaking at the right time.

What a moment for Australia. Nobody gave them a chance at the start of the tournament.

Australia look like a side that has just grown in confidence. It has been a composed chase and they have almost done it at a canter.

It has been a fantastic chase throughout. Mitch Marsh hasn't given his wicket away and you always feel like there will be a twist or turn in a chase but there just hasn't been.

Mitchell Marsh goes for a huge swing down the ground off Tim Southee and hustles it under a sliding Jimmy Neesham for four.

    Mitch Marsh looks absolutely knackered.

Luckily for him, Australia need just 11 from the final 12 balls.

New Zealand can go back with their heads held high. T20 is such a random game but they have performed admirably again.

You always felt they lacked a little bit of power in the middle but they have made up for that in other areas.
