England will be talking the right game. At the minute they are not delivering it at the minute. Brendon will know over the week coming into this match it has been very positive. Inside 24 hours reality has hit home that this Test team are down the bottom of the rankings for a reason.

What can change things is winning a game like this.

If England are set to 280 to win and do so, then suddenly you are on a roll and you start to feel so much better about everything.

  4. 'Not a done deal for New Zealand'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

    Jeremy Coney
Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

There is a new ball for England in the morning. It is not a done deal for New Zealand. The pitch has become more placid.

This New Zealand side will get better over the course of the next two weeks. They are rusty.

They are a very good team who don't rely on one or two individuals. They have great mentality, no egos and play Test cricket in a sensible way.

  6. 'I'll sleep well tonight'published at 19:04 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

New Zealand's Tom Blundell speaking to Sky Sports after finishing on 90 not out: "It was tough toil throughout but to build that partnership with Daz (Daryl Mitchell) was very pleasing."

On the conversation with Mitchell: "The chat was just to dig in really and build that partnership and I thought we did that bloody well. I found it quite difficult at first, but it was all about being patient and cashing in on the bad balls."

On dealing with England's short ball tactic: "For me, I like it short and my game plan was to play it and play it as much as I can."

On sleeping 10 runs short of a Lord's century: "I'll sleep well tonight. Those milestones will take care of themselves. Our job is to come back in the morning and when that new ball comes, we'll just need to dig in and continue to build that partnership."

  7. 'McCullum is very positive'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

Here's more from England assistant coach Paul Collingwood speaking to BBC TMS: "We have a new ball in the morning and have some exceptional new ball bowlers in the dressing room who can do some special stuff. So hopefully we can take some early wickets tomorrow and it is game on.

"Brendon McCullum is very positive. A glass-half-full kind of man and he is very calm as well.

"But credit to New Zealand this afternoon because they have played really well."

  8. 'We have a job to do tomorrow morning'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was tough at times. To build the partnership with Daryl was pretty pleasing.

"They bowled really well - nice and tight. We got through that and hopefully we can build on that."

On facing Matt Parkinson: "You want to put a debutant under pressure. It was good fun to try and be positive."

Asked how big a lead New Zealand can build on day three: "Not sure. Me and Daryl have a job to do tomorrow morning. The new ball is around the corner. If we get through that who knows."

  9. 'Parkinson is a work in progress'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Parkinson from the Pavilion End looked too slow and looked better from the Nursery End. He is a work in progress. He has a good first-class record but my first observation is he will have to bowl around 50mph rather than the 45mph we saw from the Pavilion End.

  10. 'A testing afternoon'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

England assistant coach Paul Collingwood speaking to BBC TMS: "It has been a testing afternoon. The rhythm of the game has changed.

"After all the excitement of yesterday people were expecting it to continue but it has shown once you got the heavy roller on and the ball got soft you can make runs on there.

"From a coach's point of view all you can ask is to keep the intensity in the field and try and create chances. They really tried everything out there, different lines, short pitched bowling, to try and create chances but they never came."

On Matt Parkinson's debut: "It's a nice story. He was sat in his back garden yesterday and he gets a phone call and needs to get down to London. I'm delighted for him. I'm sure he would have liked to get a bit more assistance from the pitch but he stuck at it.

"The wicket was doing a lot more yesterday. There was some swing and seam movement. Once the ball got soft we didn't get that."

  11. 'Bowlers should get used to fielding'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

It will be a long summer. The England bowlers will have to get used to fielding. Overton will have to play and they will have to find one or two others. The cartel is not there. I feel for Ben Stokes because a captain is only as good as its attack.

  12. Postpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

We talk about confidence all the time and I found myself saying today 'we know that England are in trouble' because we have seen it so much.

The batting crumbles under any sort of pressure. If we are feeling that watching them, what sort of job has Brendon McCullum got to stop the players from feeling that?

  14. 'There are no excuses for England'published at 18:51 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

As a batting unit yesterday was pathetic. The dismissals were not good enough. England have had as good preparation going into the first Test as they have had for a long time. There are no excuses. We know this bowling attack will give everything. It is down to the batting. The batting is the real problem.

  15. Postpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

    Jeremy Coney

There is still a lot of work to be done for New Zealand but they have somehow worked their way into more than parity.

This afternoon was was crying out for Jofra Archer, Olly Stone or Mark Wood.

Everything we knew beforehand, inside two days has been highlighted. We know the batting is fragile. When it is swinging they are fine but when it doesn't they will struggle to get 20 wickets.

Devon Conway was then dismissed shortly after the lunch interval, before that mammoth unbroken stand of 180 between Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell.

It means New Zealand lead by 227 runs going into day three, with six second-innings wickets in hand.

England will have a new ball after one over in the morning.

  18. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

England started well with the ball again with James Anderson dismissing Will Young with his seventh ball.

Matthew Potts then removed Kane Williamson, for the second time in this Test, and Tom Latham to reduce the tourists to 35-3.
