England's day started pretty poorly with the final three wickets falling for just 25 runs in just 6.5 overs.

Stuart Broad was bowled, Ben Foakes edged behind and Matt Parkinson was caught in the clips.

It meant they only had a slender eight-run lead after the first innings, despite impressively bowling New Zealand out for 132 on day one.

Mitchell has just come from the IPL. To adjust within the short period of time and bat for the time he has that is good work. Of the three sessions you would say New Zealand won two and a half of them.

England are putting up assistant coach Paul Collingwood tonight by the look of things, so we'll bring you what he's got to say.

What a partnership from Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell.

England have been fairly blunt and the pitch hasn't offered much this afternoon and evening but the Kiwi pair came together at 56-4 - a lead of just 47 - and have completely swung the momentum in their favour.

    They've put on 180 in 56.1 overs.

    NZ 236-4; lead by 227

That is us done for the day but not before Daryl Mitchell plays an absolutely glorious off drive to the boundary from the final ball of the day. The New Zealand balcony applaud.

Mitchell reaches close on 97 not out, while Tom Blundell is unbeaten on 90.

They have put on an unbroken 180 and have put New Zealand in a position of control.

Matt Parkinson has struggled slightly with his line, perhaps because of the Lord's slope.

A ball on Daryl Mitchell's hip is worked for a single, before Parkinson changes his line by going round the wicket.

It is again on the legs though and Tom Blundell steps away and whips past the short square leg fielder and away to the fence.

Both Mitchell and Blundell are into the nervous nineties.

Mitchell has been busy. He has been able to get out of his crease and put some pressure on the bowler. He has changed the whole equation.

Daryl Mitchell keeps the strike as he works Matthew Potts into square leg for a single.

He and Tom Blundell have their eyes on close now, with just over five minutes to go.

Felix Guest: With England struggling with the bat at the top of the order it would be great to see Marcus Trescothick back opening.

YogI Collins: We already have the one player we need in the team but he needs convincing to come to test cricket. Adil Rashid. From abroad, I would take Rashid Khan. Incredible spinner, can bat and handy in the field too.

Three from Matt Parkinson's latest over.

His last delivery in that over was 43mph. There will be chat about his pace in the next few hours and days.

The thing is we have seen for 18 months when England's batting is put under pressure it collapses. It would be a surprise if they were to chase over 250.

  14. NZ 223-4published at 75 overs

    Mitchell 88, Blundell 86

A couple more to Tom Blundell as works a leggy ball by Matthew Potts round the corner.

There are just under 15 minutes until close. We'll probably have time for another three or four overs.

There are five overs till the new ball so England will have that pretty much straight away in the morning.

New Zealand would want 260 or 270 to use as a base because the pitch has got easier. And you have people like Stokes who do the unusual.

Just a single from Matt Parkinson's 12th over. He's got figures of 0-35 so far.

He's bowled OK, without being too threatening so far. We really shouldn't judge him on this pitch today. It's day two at Lord's - England haven't been playing a spinner at the ground in recent years, remember.

Noting the comment at 17.36 comparing Overton and Broad's stats in the County Championship this season. Have we reached the stage where the difference in quality between Div 1 and 2 is definitive enough for it to be relevant to Test selection? Potts' performance so far suggests that it's not a straightforward issue

    Fielding Jimmy!

A lovely straight punt from Daryl Mitchell gets Jimmy Anderson sprawling at mid-on and he tips it at mid-on and Ben Stokes has to go haring after it from mid-off too.

It saves a couple of runs.

Go on, I'll say it. New season, new torrent of negativity from England fans. Why have "we" already written this game off because two Kiwi middle order batsmen have made runs when no-one else has in this game? What's to stop our middle order, or even top order doing the same now the pitch has flattened out? They're the best we've got, get behind them, not against them!!!

David Warner (No, not THAT one)

Not much happening for Matt Parkinson from that end yet either.

    Two from the over.

Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell will be starting to think about the close in 25 minutes or so.
