Since that no-ball, England have added 40 runs.

That little episode has me looking back at photos from the 2019 World Cup final. I'm still not over it.

    This is nice...

Ben Stokes is scampering back after turning down a single and as the ball is thrown in it hits his bat, just as it did at this end in the World Cup final against New Zealand. The bowler Trent Boult comes in and has a giggle and Stokes beats him on the back with his glove.

Joe Root even holds up his gloves at the other end, just as Stokes did on that famous day.

Everyone is smiling and laughing. Lovely.

Can Ben Stokes just stand still and bat? Please.

It's beautiful when he stays still.

Brendon McCullum is still watching this from the England balcony. He's slouched like a teenager at the moment with his feet up. He doesn't strike me as a man who will get nervous if this does get close.

Kyle Jamieson covers his face with his hand at the end of the over when Stokes leaves a good un. Excellent leave.

Anthony: Brilliant isn't it! 40 run partnership and my econometrics exam no longer matters. Definitely a correlation between Ben Stokes at the crease and my lack of ability to work...

  7. Eng 114-4published at 41 overs

    Root 26, Stokes 27

The news from the New Zealand camp is Colin de Grandhomme, who pulled up when bowling earlier, has suffered a "suspected strain to his right heel".

That leaves me with one question... you can strain your heel?!

New Zealand say he will not return to the field today.

Walking down the pitch to half man half totem pole Kyle Jamieson would be the last thing on my mind but Ben Stokes, who is hogging the strike at the moment, does so here. It gives him two more runs out to mid-wicket.

Next man in Ben Foakes is watching on from the dressing room, chewing away on some gum.

I think I'd still rather be in New Zealand's position.

Jamieson is back in the attack and this could be a key moment in the game...

Floodlights are on. Overcast, Breezy afternoon. He's going to bowl around the wicket.to Stokes.

Boult responds by clattering a bouncer into Stokes' ribs. I think that even hurt Stokes, surely the hardest man in cricket.

If I wanted to tempt fate I'd point out that, other than that bouncer, Stokes and Root are looking relatively comfortable right now.

You can just feel the crowd on the edge of their seats. If they start getting into a little passage of play here, hitting boundaries, running those ones and twos. this crowd will be willing them on.

Ben Stokes cuts for four again! He does like batting on this ground against New Zealand...

The floodlights are ramping up further and the ball is moving a little for Southee and Boult. Root misses one drive but corrects himself in the remainder of the over.

I tell you what that shot reminded me of. Headingley.

'And he hammers it for four.'

Kitchen sink through the off side on the back foot.

Shot! Ben Stokes eases his way through a Trent Boult over before smashing him away Headingley 2019 style from the final ball.

One fella in the stand rises to his feet to applaud. He believes.

These two just need to take a leaf out of Mitchell and Blundell's book.

Get yourself in. Get the bowlers tired and then cash in.

  17. Eng 100-4published at 36 overs

    Root 24, Stokes 15

The crowd is risen from its post-tea snooze as a single for Joe Root brings up the England 100. The England fans look like they want to really get behind this XI but just don't quite believe at the moment.

Brendon McCullum just about musters a clap from his position, feet up and arms folded on the balcony.

As Aggers says the cloud has filled in a little and the floodlights are coming on. It's not particularly bright which will likely mean we struggle to fit all of the overs in, even though we can play until 7pm.

Stokes gets through a maiden from Trent Boult with relative ease.
