You would think that Joe Root and Ben Stokes will need to get at least 130 of remaining 200, especially with there being no Chris Woakes or Sam Curran at the moment. Matthew Potts might get runs at eight but he's not going to attack you.

    Target 277

Things have calmed down a bit out there but that flurry of boundaries by Bairstow feels like a long, long time ago.

Joe Root goes to cut Tim Southee's final delivery of the over, but it's a half-hearted effort and the ball zips through to Tom Blundell.

There's an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where the Enterprise gets stuck in a time loop, and the same events happen over and over again. This innings has that kind of feel about it.

Stokes blocking, then going for it, all the time with massive tension in the air. I feel like we've been here before.

    Target 277

That's a nice take by Blundell down the leg side as the ball died on the Kiwi keeper a bit.

Next ball up, and Stokes walks down the track, essays a push into off but sees the ball whistle through into Blundell's gloves.

Maybe Ben Stokes just isn't feeling comfortable at the crease at all and he's just doing this to get him going and then he might settle down.

It is an intriguing period of cricket.

Stokes is still coming down the track, this time to Southee and edging the quickie over the slips for four.

    Skittish, to say the least.

Would the throw have run him out? I think it might well have done, you know...

I just wonder why Ben Stokes feels he needs to get down to Colin de Grandhomme? He is a world class operator and can adjust and play and after four or five overs De Grandhomme will start to chase Stokes a little bit.

  13. Eng 78-4published at 15:40 British Summer Time 4 June 2022

    Target 277

It had been a bit frenetic from the England captain, he had been coming down the track almost every time, then a swipe outside off stump was underedged into the wickets.

Off the final ball of the over, Stokes pushes into the on side for a quick single that, had the throw hit the stumps, would have seen him struggling.

To quote Bill Lawry, it's all happening!
