I still can't believe England managed to do that with relative ease today.

It was the third highest chase at Lord's.

Not only was there not really a chance, there wasn't an appeal.

Read all about it in Stephan Shemilt's report.

  4. "What a player and what a man"published at 13:06 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

England captain Ben Stokes talking to Sky Sports: "That was amazing. A great Test and fantastic to be a part of. I thought the way we handled the pressure in the fourth innings to chase down 277 on a pretty difficult wicket was fantastic. Obviously, Mr Dependant, Joe Root, stood up and scored a hundred – and 10,000 runs. What a player and what a man.”

On the week at Lord's: "Yeah, regardless of being captain, the first Test of the summer at Lord's always has a special buzz about it, but it was obviously a special week and to come out with the win makes it even better."

On the relationship with Brendon McCullum: "With Brendon, the language that he uses in the press is very similar to what he uses in the changing room. We’re very happy with the win of course, but this is a change in mindset and I’m pleased with how we’ve operated through the week."

  6. Change in mentality 'massively important' - Stokespublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

More from England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to Sky Sports about changing the mentality within the England side: "Yeah, that's massively important. We’re going to have some tough times going forwards and it’s about giving the lads confidence where we can. The way Lees came out yesterday for example. It’s the best he’s looked in an England shirt."

On Matthew Potts on debut: "He loved it. Watching him progress in a Durham shirt to where he is now is great. I felt like when I needed a wicket, Pottsy was a man I needed to throw the ball to. He's got an amazing attitude and its very exciting to see that with such a young kid."

On the return of Anderson and Broad: "Seeing the two old boys like that. It’s something that we all admire and inspires us to go and achieve great things."

  8. Broad & Anderson's return 'such a boost'published at 12:54 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to the BBC: "Good, innit? Playing at Lord’s is special but to come away with the win after the way it ebbed and flowed to take it away, with the conditions in the bowlers favour, was brilliant.

"Mr Dependable Joe Root was amazing. I am so pleased for him. And having Broad and Anderson back was such a boost. They are such an inspiration. To see them running in with their knees up getting the crowd going was special."

  10. 'Great to see Root back'published at 12:49 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

England captain Ben Stokes, speaking to Test Match Special about Joe Root: "Playing for England winning matters to him. Walking off 115 not out, he has won us the game and after stepping down as captain. It was special. It is great to see him back. He does not have to worry about it - just worry about scoring runs.

"Joe is one of the best in the world. One of the best Test match batsmen England will have for a long time. No one is surprised and you could see how emotional he was walking off."

Potts looks like a player who can cope with playing for England. He looked ready to play but England still need pace. The cartel of Wood. Archer and Olly Stone, somehow they need some pace into this attack. It needs that little point of difference.

  12. Root's landmark 'an unbelievable achievement'published at 12:42 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

Root makes century to reach 10,000 Test runs

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson talking to Sky Sports: "The game ebbed and flowed the whole time. I thought both teams fought hard and we saw how difficult it was and how much it changed throughout but take nothing away from the quality of the English performance."

On responding as a side: "It’s about moving on quickly and taking those learnings, moving into the next Test. We’ll reflect on this and look forward to the next one."

On Joe Root: "A fantastic game of cricket and an incredible innings from an amazing player. It's truly an unbelievable achievement. You recognise the quality of the player and his longevity as a world class player."

  15. 'It was not meant to be'published at 12:36 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson on TMS: "We were hopeful of getting an early break but it was not to be. Root is difficult to dismiss, he played outstandingly well. We had opportunities. It was not meant to be.

"The harder ball reacts quicker and reacts differently but as it goes softer it is a patience game. It is frustrating but it was a great game of cricket, a shame that it was not the right result for us.

"The last 18 months he has been prolific. He showed his class again today and to bring up 10,000 runs is a special achievement. It was an incredible innings from Joe."

It is amazing what a win can do for the group. Imagine if England had lost – there would have been a lot of pressure at Nottingham for those young players. Hopefully this gives the younger players a boost. A lot of them don’t know what it is like to win a Test match for England.

  17. Postpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

England batter Joe Root on TMS, speaking about reaching 10,000 Test runs at the exact same age as Alastair Cook: "I didn’t know about that. It is nice to spoken about in the same breath as England’s greatest ever batter. It is a privilege."

  18. Postpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

Ben Stokes is speaking at the presentation now.

"Mr Dependent Joe Root stood up," he says. "What a player and what a man."

England batter Joe Root, speaking to TMS: "It’s a nice feeling. It was hell of a game and for this game to be in Warney’s memory with such aggressive cricket is fitting in many ways.

"I feel great. It means a huge amount to the group and it was nice to do it for Ben. He has done it for me so many times over the years it was nice to give it back for him today.

"I just love batting, I want to score as many runs as I can for the group and nice to do it at the start of the summer."
