I think Alex Lees is the kind of person who'll be sat in the dressing room thinking that he's missed out here.

I look at Lees this summer, compared to those tests in the Caribbean and it's clearly a shift in mindset.

  2. 'We've gone away from tactical aspects'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

More from Ollie Pope on TMS: "There's one ball difference between three and four and that's where I bat for Surrey. I love batting there. Getting out there and getting amongst the cricket rather than sitting and waiting with your pads on for so long is something I've seen as a positive."

On Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes: "We've gone away from the tactical aspects of things. We can do that away from the games. It's just about decision making. Almost just enjoying it and loving every minute out there because it's cricket. It's supposed to be fun and today was. I love batting and today was a great day."

On batting with Joe Root: "Amazing. He's England's greatest. Watching him do what he's doing at the moment - it's a joy to be a part of in the changing room or out there in the middle with him. It's amazing to watch."

On Trent Bridge crowd: "It's quite hard to take it all in when it happens. I'll probably have a flick through the video later. The crowd here has been amazing. They're fun funny. They're amazing. Hopefully we can push for a win."

On the game: "We've got to focus on our batting [tomorrow]. Hopefully sneak in front of them or get as close as we can and hopefully put them under some pressure with early wickets."

At his best, Joe Root is just lovely to watch. He adorns the orthodox game.

He plays his shots so he can score quickly and he bases his game around a straighter bat.

He's probably the best in the world right now.

  4. 'It hasn't been an easy ride'published at 19:02 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

England batter Ollie Pope, who scored a career-best 145, speaking to TMS: "It was very special. My first home hundred. It was an amazing feeling. A great crowd here at Trent Bridge. It hasn't been an easy ride over the past however long with the Ashes and whatever so it's nice to be in that changing room and batting out there today."

On second Test century: "I didn't know exactly when but I know I've got the game for this level. It's just about trying to be consistent as possible. A new role - batting higher up the order - can provide that opportunity."

  5. 'Root is a genius'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

When he gets out in the middle, that's his peaceful place. And I look back at the story that Moeen said about Root working on his batting during Covid. He just enjoys it.

I've never seen bat a player for so long and still seem to look so busy every ball.

He's a genius. That's a word that probably gets used too much but the way he's played over the last couple of years is just genius.

    Phil Tufnell
Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

England will be absolutely delighted. There's a chance that they can go past New Zealand, get a lead and put some pressure on them.

Pressure is a very good bowler, I believe.

  7. 'We hung in there'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

New Zealand spinner Michael Bracewell on TMS: "It was pretty flat for a long time there. We actually stuck at it really well and kept fighting. I think it sort happened in clumps there for a little bit and obviously England piled on the pressure again. Joe Root played beautifully and so did Ollie Pope. They put us under pressure but I thought we hung in there."

I'm 49 and can honestly say that Joe Root is the best English batter I've ever seen, followed by Gower and Pietersen.

Michael Bracewell has just told TMS he did "a little pray" while he was bowling with Ben Stokes attacking him.

He eventually got his man. He bowled really well and also batted well yesterday. New Zealand keep producing.

I hope this triggers Ollie Pope into that inner belief in his ability. It's early days still but I hope it gives him that inner belief to be consistent and I think it should give him a massive boost.

I just hope this is the trigger to play the kind of innings that we've seen here.

At this level, it's all about the inner thought.

Alex Lees has shown enough in the last two innings. The 20 in the second innings at Lord's showed he could play. He's played some glorious shots today.

He'll be disappointed but we've seen enough to know he'll be around the team for the next few Test matches.

  12. Postpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

A mention for Alex Lees today too.

His start to Test cricket hasn't been the easiest but he looked the most fluent we've seen so far today.

He looked utterly gutted to miss out and will have probably spent most of today kicking himself in the changing room.

Tom: Is it too early to think about getting a lead of about 70? With Root at the crease anything is possible. We've also seen Foakes can dig in and score too. The tide is turning in England's favour. Bat for 3 hours tomorrow it's game on.

  14. 'Root is England's greatest player'published at 18:46 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Poetry. I think that sums it up perfectly. We're witnessing something special.

I've known Joe for years and I really do believe he's England's greatest player.

He's such a joy to watch and he makes batting look so easy.

It's just that drive and determination. You've got to have an incredible appetite to just keep on scoring centuries.

  15. 'Root is batting poetry'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

If you haven't had the chance to watch Joe Root today, then I implore that you do because that was batting poetry.

Sitting and just watching that was an absolute privilege.

  16. Postpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

At the start of the day Moeen Ali said on TMS that 400 for five or six would be a good day for England or 440 for three or four would be a great day.

They closed on 473-5. I reckon we can file that under great.

  17. Postpublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

I can hear sections of Trent Bridge singing "Ollie, Ollie Pope" as they filter away.

A breakthrough day for Pope? Let's hope so.

  18. Postpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

Aggers has just called being able to watch Joe Root's innings "a privilege".

    Sums it up perfectly.
