It will be interesting to see what Joe Root does here because when Ben Stokes got out at Lord's he went through the gears a bit more.

I don't think he needs to do that here because he's scored beautifully today.

Ben Foakes joins Joe Root, who is still there on 126. Bracewell is beaming.

It was great entertainment but I hope Ben Stokes isn't going to play in that style every time in Test cricket because he's better than that.

The innings at Headingley - he probably played the innings of Test match history but he'd earned the right.

I hope he's not always going to play like that because he's dropped down a position. He can be a bit more consistent playing a bit more conventionally.

What a storm it has been.

    That was entertaining.

The Test purists will say it wasn't quite the conventional way of playing Test cricket but it was certainly entertaining.

England are still 148 behind but if New Zealand get one more now and get into England's tail they could end up with quite a big lead if they bowl well.

    Stokes c Boult b Bracewell 46 (Eng 405-5)

One slog too many. The cameo is over. Michael Bracewell has his first wicket in Test cricket, and it's Ben Stokes.

Stokes heaves it over to the leg side but this time finds the fielder. Trent Boult has time to settle himself and take the grab.

An entertaining innings of 46 from 33 balls.

This is like a one-day game.

It's certainly a rollercoaster ride as Brendon McCullum promised.

New Zealand are in real trouble here with a bowler down.

He connects cleanly with this one! A huge Ben Stokes six down the ground.

New Zealand are in trouble but if they can get Ben Stokes out quickly then they are one away from the tail.

  10. Eng 399-4published at 94.3 overs

Ben Stokes slogs. It's high. It's not far enough. But it's lands in no man's land. Stokes survives.

New Zealand haven't given Ben Stokes any options with all these people back on the boundary. They've got to dangle a carrot.

  12. Eng 397-4published at 94.1 overs

Relentless. Root takes a page out of Stokes' book by dancing down and heaving Bracewell to the leg side. Four more. The partnership is now worth 50.

Ben Stokes is at number six for this reason. He hopes the top five will do what they've done and he'll be able to play like this.

New Zealand may have been forced to go to the off-spinner but I think this is the way to bowl to Ben Stokes.

  14. Postpublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

With a bowler down, Latham turns to the spin of Michael Bracewell in search of a wicket.

Trent Boult completes the over. Substitute fielder Cam Fletcher saves his side three runs with a good diving stop at mid-on.

The Root-Stokes partnership is now worth 48. Stokes has 38 of those.

I think he's broken down. He's taken his sweater and cap off the umpire and he's going off the field.

That's sad. Hopefully it's just cramp or something.

Now then. Kyle Jamieson has left the field having bowled three deliveries of his over.

I don't think there will be too many New Zealand bowlers putting their hand up here. Ben Stokes is on a mission.

  20. Eng 390-3published at 93.3 overs

Jamieson, Tom Latham and Trent Boult are in conversation mid-over. Perhaps discussing a plan on how to go about bowling to a fired up Ben Stokes?
