Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

All his team-mates are giving Joe Root a clap up on the balcony and let's not forget about Ollie Pope too. A great knock for him.

That second session when Root and Pope got together was just sublime.

A superb day for England. They've only lost four wickets and scored 383 runs.

Ultimately it's Joe Root's day again. He walks off undefeated.

All done for the day. What a day of Test cricket.

England have scored 383 runs and lost four wickets. What entertainment.

Where is the game going to go from here? It is set up beautifully for the final two days.

There have been some quite frankly ridiculous shots today but this is right up there.

Watch it once. Watch it twice. You'll still probably go wow on the third watch too.

It's not a great delivery from Boult. A wide-ish full toss.

Root didn't hit it perfectly but it's a gift for him late in the day.

    More width. Four more runs.

Don't bowl there to Joe Root, Trent Boult.

This is first Test in England for eight years where the joint tally of the first two innings has exceeded 1,000 runs.

The last time was at Lord's in 2014 against Sri Lanka. That was also the same match where Moeen Ali made his Test debut.

    Another maiden.

New Zealand were very keen for another over - Matt Henry was running back to his mark in between balls.

They tried to set men back at the end of the over so Ben Foakes could keep the strike but England's keeper watched it go by.

    A maiden from Trent Boult.

Both sides are eyeing the close now. The next over may be the last.

Here's how Joe Root brought up his 150.

    A special, special talent.

Now, now Ollie. Let's not start a Messi v Ronaldo debate.

We can do a Root v Kohli v Smith v Williamson debate during a rain delay later in the summer instead.

Ollie: To Jay - Root is not the Cristiano Ronaldo of Test Cricket. He's the Lionel Messi of Test cricket!! One of his best ever knocks.

Lovely sound off Foakes' bat. He's played two or three fine strokes and that was just about the best of them.

I'm not sure how they're going to fit the highlights in tonight. There's also a Tuffers guide to Trent Bridge.

    Oh, shot.

Ben Foakes leans on a drive and it evades cover and mid-off and runs away to the boundary.

    That made a gorgeous noise.

Matt Henry then beats Foakes' outside edge as payback. Bowlers have been fairly luckless in this Test.

Definitely worth having a listen to that, but...

    1. Wait until we've finished up here about 19:00 BST

    2. Then you need to watch Today at the Test on BBC Two or iPlayer to watch how good Joe Root is

Then you can listen to Ask Moeen Ali. Cheers.

  19. Ask Moeen Ali podcast now livepublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 12 June 2022

During the lunch interval today Moeen Ali answered your questions on Test Match Special.

Here are just a few of the questions put to him:

    • Do you think there is a chance for you to come back and play Test cricket now Brendon McCullum is the coach and Ben Stokes is the captain? Does that change things for you?
    • Who are the most difficult batters and bowlers that you have played against so far?
    • Does it frustrate you that there are barriers for Asian cricketers and do you have any solutions at all?

Did you miss the former* England spinner's answers? Don't you worry. You can now listen to the 'Ask Moeen Ali' TMS special podcast.

    *maybe not for long.

Moeen Ali said on TMS he is due to fly to Netherlands on Tuesday. England will play three ODIs against the Dutch, beginning on 17 June.

Disappointed to hear that England are flying to the Netherlands for the one-day-series when a direct train gets you there in 4.5 hrs. I'm leading a group of 23 to watch on Friday we're going by train and ferry to reduce our impact.
