When it comes out of your hand like that, it's a lovely feeling.

That's a beautiful ball. It hit the seam, bounced and spun past everyone.

This pitch is starting to do something.

Michael Bracewell gets one to keep a little bit low and Ben Foakes has to jar down on it. It may have even come off the bottom of the bat.

The offie, making his Test debut, then spins one between bat and pad as Foakes attempts to drive. The ball just evades off stump and runs away for four byes.

The next two days could be really interesting if this pitch breaks up a little bit.

All seems very relaxed and jovial. If we are 100 behind and NZ knock a quick 270 I don't fancy us surviving a day 5 pitch. Need to be more professional.

    Oh!

Joe Root is human after all.

Tim Southee offers him a drive but the former England skipper doesn't quite get to the pitch of the ball and he's beaten on the outside edge.

Southee purses his lips in disappointment.

A difference between attacking and reckless though, no?

All for Ben Stokes attacking and being aggressive but to do it ball after ball? He's better than that.

Tom: You can't praise Ben Stokes for being an attacking batsman if you're then going to criticise him when it doesn't work

130 runs is still a long way for England. Yes it's a good wicket to bat on but if you lose a couple of wickets, you never know.

Joe Root and Ben Foakes milk Michael Bracewell for four singles.

These two will want to be there at close in 40 minutes or so.

He is running with his short-leg pads and that can play a bit on your mind, but at this level he should be taking that.

He made good ground to get there and then put it down. A life for Ben Foakes.

    Can anyone catch anything anymore?

Tim Southee bangs one in short and Ben Foakes looks to pull away but he ends up top-edging it - despite the ball not getting that big on him - and Will Young gets there at deep square leg but the ball goes through his hands and pops out.

Young was fielding in his short leg pads but he should be taking those.

(No jokes about him needing to leave right now, please).

Nicky Mc: I felt like Stokes could have stabbed a few through the leg side, 1’s and 2’s. Needlessly lost his wicket on a pitch he could have scored big on. Needs to be smarter as a captain.

Here's how Ben Stokes got out.

The Stokes-McCullum way or a bit naive and irresponsible?

    Just one from the over.

Michael Bracewell has been underused by Tom Latham.

Ben Stokes threatened to take a liking to him but he's bowled pretty well otherwise.

I don't think I've seen a review missing the stumps by that much!

We spend a good while deciding if it hit Joe Root's arm or glove sweatband. The third umpire eventually decides it doesn't so we proceed to ball tracking.

Well, we've lost two minutes of our lives. It was going about 50cm over the stumps.

A total waste of a review.

    Hmmm.

Tom Latham has reviewed one with Joe Root looking to sweep.

Has it hit him in line?
