The sun is shining and the pitch is doing nothing.

Ollie Pope has just scored a magnificent century. He is a player of huge talent and one that people have spoke about highly for many years. I just wonder if this is the innings that triggers the belief and consistency. Batting at three was a risk but he's got a pure wicket here and he's got to put platy in the bank because there will another week that doesn't look at rosy at this.

At the other end Joe Root has got to 64 with a cigar on.

    Thanks Callum.

Well, well, well. A lovely afternoon to bat.

All pretty plain-sailing for England so far. They'll be hoping for more of the same.

New Zealand have been hit for over 520 for seven wickets in the last two innings, but we've only seen two overs of spin.

A quiet over before drinks with England just adding three singles. The hosts have added 68 runs in the first hour of the afternoon session.

While the players are having a drink you can enjoy the best of Ollie Pope's second Test century.

Aadam Patel will take you through to tea.

We've seen all sorts of shots from Ollie Pope this afternoon.

Here's his four and six off Matt Henry.

Kyle Jamieson is starting to look a little bit threatening for New Zealand.

Ollie Pope tries to work into the leg-side and he gets a leading edge but it goes pretty much all along the ground to the cover field.

He tries to late cut to end the over but it keeps a little bit low on him and he's beaten.

    Oh, my. What a shot.

Joe Root gets forward and drives through a packed off-side for another boundary. He's literally laced that between three fielders in the covers. Unbelievable.

A very loud of rendition of "Roooooooottttt" follows from the Trent Bridge crowd. They've been lively this afternoon.

England are having a little spurt here. If they want to make a bit of a charge and take some more risks, it could get interesting and they could lose a couple of wickets. And they're still a heck of a long way behind.

Here's how Joe Root reached his 80th score of 50-plus in Test cricket.

It has been effortless for him today.

  11. Eng 253-2published at 64 overs

    Good stop.

Joe Root rocks back and tries to back cut past gully and away to the third boundary but the fielder does really well, at full stretch, to stop it and save four runs.

England have added 58 since lunch.

    Four more.

Ollie Pope leans on a drive and the ball races away off the square. Textbook.

"Ollie, Ollie Pope" sings Trent Bridge.

In the last 122 overs of batting for England, they've scored 459-3 across the second innings at Lord's and the first innings here.

In their previous 127 overs including the last Test in West Indies, they lost 24 wickets for 330 runs.

That's the sort of stroke that Sir Viv Richards used to play back in the day.

Better from Joe Root. Glorious, in fact.

He takes a little step outside off stump and a lovely on-drive brings up four more.

That brings up the 100-run partnership off 127 balls too. It's been a great partnership.

Root really thought he'd given his wicket up there.

  17. Eng 244-2published at 62.2 overs

    CATCH IT!

    What is Joe Root doing?

He shuffles slightly outside off and looks to hoick/sweep from on one knee into the stand but top edges it up in the air.

Keeper Tom Blundell runs after it and as a result Kyle Jamieson, on the square-leg boundary, seems to leave it to him - when he's probably better placed - and it lands bang in the middle of them.

    A let-off for Root.

Where are all the Pope naysayers at now ? Give this guy time. He's an obvious talent.

A change for New Zealand as the giant Kyle Jamieson comes in.

He bounds into the crease and he's able to restrict England to just a single.

Twice Ollie Pope tries to latch onto some length with cuts but bottom-edges into the ground and into the slips.

    Keep patient, Ollie.

Ollie Pope has 14 first-class hundreds:

    - nine at The Oval in London

    - one at the Woodbridge Road ground in Guildford

    - one at the Rose Bowl in Southampton

    - one at the ICC Academy in Dubai

    - one Test hundred in South Africa

So yes, this is his first hundred north of the Thames, in his 14th match north of the river.
