  3. 'Give it 10 to 15 minutes and my knee is fine'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

More from Ben Stokes to TMS, speaking about appearing to injure his knee: "I had my cartilage taken out five or six years ago. It's a strange one - if I hyperextend it a bit too much it just goes pop. Give it 10 or 15 minutes and it's absolutely fine. I'll be fine."

  5. 'What an advert for Test cricket'published at 18:25 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

More from Jonny Bairstow at the post-match presentation: "It was good fun, that's the number one thing. We have toiled very hard for a couple of days and the bowlers worked so hard.

"That put us in a position to be able to chase something down. The run rate has been high throughout the game so it was always game on.

"Getting close to parity when they got 550 is huge. The guys all stood up. It was a fantastic team effort all the way through.

"When you first come out you have got to give yourself a few balls because you don't know how the pitch has changed since the first innings.

"We knew we needed 160 and we had the ability to go through the gears. There was a short boundary so I knew I could put some into the stands.

"We have played on a lot of tricky pitches that haven't got 500 runs in them, we've played scrappy games of cricket recently but this was a belter.

"Day five, full house - what an advert for Test cricket."

Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

Daryl Mitchell came out of this Test OK. Tom Brundell did too. Michael Bracewell showed on debut he can bat OK and might become a possible bowler. Trent Boult had a good-ish game.

So I don't think all is lost for New Zealand but it's clear they're down the other side of the crest. And that's OK - that happens with every team.

  7. 'It's going to be a journey'published at 18:21 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

Player of the Match Jonny Bairstow at the post-match presentation: "It was great fun to be out there. It's one of those things, when you're in that kind of mood, you've just got to go with it.

"You talk about being in the zone, but if you strip it back to just being you and the bowler and just watching the ball, that's where you've got to get to.

"I had a cheese and ham toastie and a cup of coffee at tea. I'll have that every tea time from now on.

"Ben said to me, don't you dare hit it on the ground, just hit it into the stands!

"We just looked at it like a one-day game. The pitch was good, the outfield was fast. With the players we have, the brand of cricket we want to play, days like today are very exciting.

"If this is happening now, it's going to be some journey."

  8. Postpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

Ben Stokes played a major part in that win too.

He finished 75 not out from 70 balls.

  9. 'Everyone has contributed to this win'published at 18:18 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

England captain Ben Stokes at the post-match presentation: "I can't take too much credit for that. For all five days, the boys were phenomenal with bat, ball and in the field.

"I think today was set up perfectly for the way that we want to go about things looking forward. We don't want to back away and stand still.

"It wasn't just myself and Jonny today, look at Leesy [Alex Lees] at the top there, the more he plays the more he looks like a Test opener. Everyone has contributed to this win.

"Test cricket isn't always about what you're seeing there, but we wanted to put as much pressure as we could back on New Zealand's bowlers. They're a bowler down and we didn't want to let them settle.

"Ben Foakes is the best keeper in the world. Nobody else comes close to him. He gives the bowlers and the slips so much confidence and he's played vital knocks with the bat in this game too.

"We were out there for a long time with the ball and there were a lot of changes. You have to be proactive and not reactive. I always try to put the pressure back on the opposition.

"My knee is fine. It's all good."

Jonny Bairstow came to the crease with England 56-3 and when Alex Lees fell 10 overs later a lot of us thought the win was a distant dream.

    Up stepped Jonny Bairstow. Enjoy.

  13. 'It will take a while to sink in'published at 18:08 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

New Zealand captain Tom Latham at the post-match presentation: "At tea it was still in the balance but the way Jonny and England played there was outstanding and all credit to them.

"It was a great surface to bat on and wickets were hard to come by. We had to try and find ways to get them out. A couple of wickets after tea changes it, but being a bowler down doesn't help either.

"But credit to our guys too, they keep running in and I couldn't ask for more from them.

"It will take a while to sink in, the emotions are raw at the moment and the boys are gutted so we will take some time away.

"Daryl Mitchell is playing fantastically and he's taken his opportunity. He's a great fighter. Hopefully we can put a good performance together at Headingley."

  14. 'Stokes should take a lot of credit'published at 18:06 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Ben Stokes won't take any credit but he should take quite a lot of it. For sticking his neck on the line. A) for taking the job when everyone was saying you can't do it as an all-rounder and our most valuable player, and b) making some brave decisions, such as Ollie Pope at three and Ben Foakes at seven.

Obviously with today being a work day most of you may have missed that ridiculous final session.

You'll be able to watch our Today at the Test highlights show on BBC Two or BBC iPlayer at 19:00 BST.

Don't miss it. It's worth recording too - this is one you'll want to watch back.

  16. 'Pope owes me nothing'published at 18:03 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

More from Ben Stokes on TMS, speaking about Ollie Pope who scored 145 in the first innings: "No-one owes me or Brendon anything for playing. They've all got themselves here. The way they go about the game. Their skills as a player. Popey has shown the world what he's all about. It's been a couple of difficult years for him - stamping his mark in South Africa then having a couple of difficult years. I've made it clear I wanted Ollie Pope in my Test team but he owes me nothing."

  17. Postpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

I can still hear fans singing about Jonny Bairstow at Trent Bridge.

  18. 'Incredible, incredible Test match'published at 18:00 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

England captain Ben Stokes speaking to TMS: "I told you this wicket would get better, didn't I?

"I'm the same as you. Today just, wow, unbelievable. I don't know what to do. It's not just about today, it's about the four days before. The work ethic everyone had before today was fantastic. You don't win from just one day. The way we fought back after 500 on the board. Popey, Rooty.

"Incredible, incredible Test match. Huge testament to everyone's character and resilience."

On Jonny Bairstow: "Man! I was out there for a while with him and he had the Jonny eyes. You'll probably see it on TV. When he has those eyes you're not stopping him. You let him go on and do what he needs to do.

"The only time I spoke to him was when Matt Henry came out to bounce him and I said don't think about putting anything on the floor, just put it into the stands. And he did."

  20. 'Bring on this style of cricket'published at 17:58 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Bring on this style of cricket. There might be the odd game where it's a bit ropey but as long as they commit to being brave and they know this is the style of cricket of Ben Stokes' captaincy.
