  1. 'Everything you want in Test cricket'published at 17:56 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

More from Jonny Bairstow to TMS: "Look at the crowd which has turned up on day five of a Test match at Trent Bridge - 13,000. People question Test cricket at times and the way in which it is played over a period of time. But there's been over 500 scored in both first innings' and 300 chased down in the last innings. If that isn't an advert for Test cricket I don't know what is.

"It was fantastic to have such a crowd in on five day. It was full of buzz. Everything you want in Test cricket. It was so fresh - it was great."

On being given freedom by Stokes & McCullum: "It means a lot. There are going to be times when it doesn't come off. That's part and parcel of it. If you keep the intent - to try and be positive. I've always tried to be positive. Sometimes it's been my downfall but that's part and parcel of the game. There's always periods of time where you look at things and you're able to change your game and that's one of the things that I pride myself on, the runs I have scored when it is tough but how I've been able to change games when we've been OK but also while it's been going tricky."

The ground was full for a reason. They were excited by this England side. After what happened at Lord's last year, there was no chance they weren't going to go for it. It's about freeing up the players mind and saying go. Even if you lose, have a go.

  4. 'We took it on straight from the horns'published at 17:48 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

England's match-winner Jonny Bairstow speaking to TMS: "It was a good craic, wasn't it? At least you had something to talk about instead of being dull and boring on the radio.

"It's really good fun. The plans after tea was let's go one of two ways. With the short side and the stand how it is, there's no point in going down. You just have to keep going up.

"There were times you had to get yourself in. I think I was 10 off 27 balls but once you're in you have to capitalise.

"We always said if we needed 160 in the final session, 160 off 35 overs, you back yourself to get that. I know we were four wickets down but the belief was still there. We've had people come out and play special knocks and that's what we firmly believed when we came to the ground this morning.

"We wanted to take some wickets and that's what we did. They played well all the way down. Fortunately we were brave enough to take this challenge on, and we took it on straight from the horns."

Rehman: Stokes playing that winning shot is opulent.

StickyToffee-Lewin: Symbolism is everything - Stokes hitting the winning runs here, reinforcing the way his team will play. Magic!

  6. 'McCullum deserves credit'published at 17:46 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

    Michael Vaughan

It's amazing how you can change mentality quickly. McCullum deserves a huge amount of credit. He's told them to go out and affect the game when they bat. Be busy. Be positive. Look to score. Watch the way Lees played in the Caribbean to how he played today. He looks a totally different player. Baz McCullum deserves credit.

  7. 'Sometimes you have to take your hat off'published at 17:44 British Summer Time 14 June 2022

New Zealand captain Tom Latham speaking to TMS: "Hats off to Jonny. The way they came out after tea took the game away. Heading into the final session it could have gone either way if we got couple of wickets, but when someone plays an innings like that... it took the game away from us.

"[After tea] we were only two wickets away from the bowlers and we were unable to make those breakthroughs. The way Jonny scored and Stokes played a great hand - sometimes you have to take your hat off."

    Long live Test cricket.

Jonny Bairstow has just told TMS that England wanted to leave 160 from the final session.

They did exactly that and they won it with an hour to spare.

    More quotes to come soon.

They are the best 50-over team in the world. It took them exactly 50 overs to chase that down. They played the white-ball way in the red-ball game.

Who on earth do you give man of the match to?

Jonny Bairstow for that magnificent brutal century?

Joe Root for his brilliantly paced and gorgeous century in the first innings?

Daryl Mitchell made 252 runs in the game but is on the losing side. He's still in the mix, surely?

I mentioned this in the middle of all the Jonny Bairstow carnage but credit again to Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club for letting everybody in for free today.

They aren't due to host a Test match next summer. These counties survive and expand on revenue from hosting international cricket so it would have been a difficult decision.

But the place was absolutely electric in that final hour and a half after tea. Hopefully today has introduced a new group of people to cricket and they have fallen in love with our beautiful sport.

It was absolute carnage after tea. But Trent Bridge take a bow because that was a brilliant Test match wicket and a brilliant idea to let everyone in for free today.

An exhilarating afternoon of cricket. Their captain, injured, has hit the winning runs. It was set up by Jonny Bairstow and that furious assault after tea.
