In reference to Conrad Burdekin (posts at 1233 and 1333) it's now 2-0 in twin tales wars. Please let this posting competition end 2-1; rather than the 3-0 we are hoping to also see onfield.

There are already some foot holes. I think this is a very dry surface and maybe New Zealand have missed a trick in playing such a long batting line-up, with Bracewell at eight.

I understand they have lost games because of batting so far and runs have been a bit of a problem, but I think they are going to miss Ajaz Patel.

  3. NZ 69-3published at 28 overs

A good start for New Zealand, four runs coming from the over.

I can't imagine they'll go full-on Stokes and Bairstow from here but you'd think they'll try and play positively.

  4. NZ 68-3published at 27.1 overs

Matthew Potts takes the first over after lunch and Henry Nicholls starts with a nice clip off his legs for three.

It's well saved by Jamie Overton on the boundary, who shakes his hand and grimaces as he just gets a bit of grass burn. Ouch.

It's almost time for the afternoon session to begin.

New Zealand will resume on 65-3, Henry Nicholls new to the crease with just one run to his name and Devon Conway on 12.

Thanks for posting my text (1233). Unbeknownst to me, and before you'd published my text, my twin brother texted you... 10 minutes before me. And you didn't publish him! I am truly the greatest twin! In your face Phil! (We're not competitive, as you can see...)

Yorkshire chairman Lord Patel, on the return of international cricket to Headingley: "Walking in this morning it really resonated. Until I actually walked in and saw the ground it didn't register.

"Being totally honest, going back to November this seemed a very distant opportunity. It seemed a bit of a pipe dream. If you had seen all the evidence I have seen and where we had to drive to you would put your mortgage on that we were not going to get this back.

"When I first came into the job I was determined to make it happen. I thought it would run a lot smother than it did. It was far, far tougher. But that was the reason I came."

Very satisfactory for England. You sense there's a lot of runs out there but perhaps there are not as many as you may think. It doesn't seem like a belter Trent Bridge type of pitch.

Three wickets down before lunch on a good batting day was looking like a good start for England, and it was so nearly four.

Only a gloveman as gifted as Ben Foakes could be disappointed with dropping a chance as hard as this.

Kane Williamson has had a difficult year in Test cricket.

He wasn't exactly looking fluent today but was grinding it out, looking like he was prepared to battle.

Until Ben Stokes brought back his main man, and he delivered the goods.

But Kane Williamson and Devon Conway opted to take the attack to Jack Leach, not satisfied with letting him settle.

    Enter Jack Leach ...

There's just something about Headingley for this man.

Having lost his opening partner, Will Young battled for his 20 runs, striking a couple of early boundaries. One from debutant Jamie Overton sped to the boundary like a rocket, showing just how good the pitch and outfield is.

Ben Stokes lost the toss and said he would also have batted first. Flat pitch, sunny morning, no James Anderson ... no bother.

Stuart Broad struck in the first over, removing Tom Latham for a duck.

    Thanks, Tom.

A much better session for England than many of us would have anticipated, taking three wickets in ideal batting conditions.

During the lunch break I'll give you a quick recap of what happened, and also bring you some of Jonathan Agnew's interview with Yorkshire chairman Lord Patel. You can listen to that on Test Match Special now, or by clicking the audio icon at the top of this page.

So as the teams head in for a deserved break and bite to eat it is time for me to do the same.

I will leave you in the more than capable hands of Ffion Wynne to guide through the afternoon session.

The key wicket was Williamson. He is obviously the real true class player in the side. It was a beautiful delivery from Broad.

Having lost the toss this morning, England would certainly settle for that.

  19. NZ 65-3published at 27 overs

Here is Stuart Broad for the final over before lunch as he comes round the wicket to Devon Conway.

He finds a bit of movement as he looks to lure Conway into a shout outside his off-stump. Conway isn't having any of it though.

Another maiden completes a very satisfactory session for England.
