That was a good ball, and a false shot. There is some purchase out there for Leach.

In the air...but safe!
Kane Williamson dances down the track and looks to hit Jack Leach over the top, but he skews it skyward into the onside before landing safe and trickling over the rope for four.

England will probably be happy with two wickets, given the conditions. It's a day where someone has got to stick their hand up and get a hundred.
Jamie Overton is pushing 85mph as he looks to unsettle Kane Williamson with some short stuff.
He then goes a touch full and Williamson pounces, timing a lovely on-drive along the ground for four to bring up the New Zealand 50.
It's England's day so far, but Williamson will think he has battled his way through a tough early spell and things should get easier from now on.
England will be pleased to see a bit of white cloud gather over Headingley. Nothing too threatening in terms of rain but it may offer the bowlers a bit of assistance.

Well, they're definitely going to take the attack to Jack Leach!
That's exactly what Australia did to him and it meant that the seamers had to bowl a lot more.
Ha, that's me told.
Devon Conway strides down the pitch and smashes Jack Leach away for a one-bounce four.
Nothing wrong with his touch there.

England have packed the leg side for Devon Conway. They've clearly noticed something in his technique that's leading them to target him with very straight bowling.
Jamie Overton gets one to jag back into Devon Conway, who inside edges the ball onto his thigh.
There's then half an appeal when Conway looks to pull a short delivery but very nearly gloves it through to Ben Foakes.
The over ends with a scratchy single into the onside. Conway yet to find his rhythm.

Consecutives deliveries, 1,033 days apart for Jack Leach at Headingley...

I don't think it's going to be easy to bowl too many maidens here. It looks great for batting.
The early wicket will give Leach a huge confidence boost.
Kane Williamson is feeling his way back into form. Shots like this will help.
There should be no issues with the over rate if Jack Leach bowls long spells. He races through this latest over for a maiden.
A touch of swing for Jamie Overton as he looks to drift the ball away from Kane Williamson.
Williamson then nudges a single into the onside to allow Overton a bowl at Devon Conway for the first time.
He gets one to jag back at the left-hander, who does well to get out of the way as the ball fizzes over the stumps.

It has been pointed out to me that that delivery was Jack Leach's first on this ground since he walked off the field alongside Ben Stokes against Australia in 2019.

Former England spinner at Headingley
New Zealand have got to try and get on top of Leach now and unsettle his rhythm.

Arjun Singh: Middle of middle stump. Why do batsmen ALWAYS review lbw when they know they haven’t hit it? That was stone dead.
Chris Ward: One of the worst reviews you'll ever see.
Good shot from Devon Conway as the left-hander takes a huge stride forward and clatters Jack Leach through the covers for four.
Alex Hartley
England spinner
You would normally expect the batter to just come forward and defend it. But he's played completely the wrong line, the ball has just held its line nicely.
As a spinner there is no better feeling than an early wicket with a hint of spin too. He'll know he's in the game now and it'll give him so much confidence after a couple of tough Tests.

Jamie Raynor: So in Leach’s first delivery at Headingley in an England shirt since he walked off with Ben Stokes in the 2019 Ashes, he gets a wicket. Who writes these scripts?
