And England turned the game heavily in their favour after a post-tea rain delay as they took three vital New Zealand wickets.
England dismissed Will Young just after lunch, but Tom Latham built his first significant score of the series.
Of course, the day began with Jamie Overton entering the nervous nineties. Sadly he departed on 97, while partner Jonny Bairstow made the second-fastest 150 in England's history. Stuart Broad added a punchy 42, while Bairstow ultimately fell for 162 as England finished on 360 and a lead of 31.
England seamer Matthew Potts, who ends the day with 2-20, speaking to Sky Sports: "I am really enjoying wearing the England shirt. Every time I wear the cap I wear it with pride. I'm relishing every chance I get.
"The Western Terrace might had a few too many beers at the backend. They were very ramped up and we tried to use it to our advantage. You know as a batsman, when the crowds against you, it can be a hard place to be."
On once again dismissing New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "It's great to get him out. It's a great Test scalp. Its happened three times and it's very enjoyable as a bowler."

We know how this England side have got this mechanism of attack with the bat, but we haven't talked about how they have bowled with the ball.
They deserve credit for taking 20 wickets on a flat pitch at Trent Bridge last week and they showed great character here.
In Matthew Potts they have a bowler who I don't remember bowling a bad ball and I loved Jack Leach opening the bowling.
I'm just seeing things with Ben Stokes' captaincy we haven't seen in a long time. He is doing things slightly out of the box and it is working. It is nice to see.
I like to see things that are slightly different in Test match cricket.
And that's that - the rain has ruled out any chance of further play this evening.
It was a short third session but potentially a decisive one as New Zealand lost three wickets for just 16 runs after the initial rain delay.

Where do New Zealand go from here? It's a good question. With those three wickets, they're down to the last two recognised pair.
They keep going back to these two players and asking them to do it again. I'm afraid New Zealand haven't played very well in this series and that's continued. I had a feeling they may be able to bat a little more solidly in the top order but that hasn't happened.
Not many runs, but a lot of excitement and three vital wickets. Here they are again while we wait for a decision on the weather.
