  2. New Zealand 125-2published at 33.3 overs

    We're back under way.

Overton tries another short one but it plugs in the pitch a bit and whacks him in the stomach this time.

Just under 89mph that one. Brisk.

Overton is at the top of his run-up, but we're still waiting for play to resume.

They've brought out a new helmet for Conway but it doesn't seem to be quite right, there's various adjustments being made.

Of course, Jamie hit his twin brother on the head with a bouncer in the County Championship clash between Surrey and Somerset earlier this month.

Craig had to retire hurt, I don't think it'll come to that for Conway.

That hit him flush on the helmet.

Devon Conway's the next man in and he's in the wars straight away.

A sharp bouncer from Jamie Overton raps him on the side of the helmet.

Conway's up and about but we'll have the physios on to check him over.

A breakthrough first ball after tea!

Jamie Overton from around the wicket, Latham waves a tentative bat at it and there's an easy take for caretaker wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps.

Ben Stokes leads his side out - he's gripping Stuart Broad by the arm, whispering a few words in his ear.

Jamie Overton is set to resume.

And England blew a chance to dismiss Latham just before tea when Joe Root put him down at first slip off Stuart Broad.

Tom Latham had failed to reach 30 in the series, but he's played a compact innings and reached fifty with a quick single off Ben Stokes... before hitting him for back-to-back fours.

England didn't find much reward after that, with Tom Latham and Kane Williamson settling in.

New Zealand resumed on 13 without loss, but they lost Will Young shortly after lunch when he was snagged by Ollie Potts off the bowling of Matthew Potts.

    Thanks Tom.

These hands are thankfully still part of a living body - I was taking a little stroll before taking my seat for this session and was nearly impaled by a patio umbrella that had been taken by a gust.

Rather blustery in Salford, but the weather's picked up on the other side of the Pennines. Let's recap the session shall we?

As England ponder what to do next I shall also take a break and leave you in the more than capable hands of Mike Peter.

Williamson is looking back to his best and he and Latham have put the bad ball away beautifully.

That is as good a session as New Zealand could have hoped for. They've scored at almost four runs an over and Latham has found his form for the first time in the series, and Williamson is looking good as well.

  18. NZ 125-1published at 33 overs

    Lead by 94

And that concludes a very good session for New Zealand.

Tom Latham and Kane Williamson had to battle hard at the start of their innings, but were rewarded for their patience once they got themselves in and look to be in good touch.

A chastening afternoon for England, who will rue that drop by Joe Root shortly before the interval.
