And England blew a chance to dismiss Latham just before tea when Joe Root put him down at first slip off Stuart Broad.

Tom Latham had failed to reach 30 in the series, but he's played a compact innings and reached fifty with a quick single off Ben Stokes... before hitting him for back-to-back fours.

England didn't find much reward after that, with Tom Latham and Kane Williamson settling in.

New Zealand resumed on 13 without loss, but they lost Will Young shortly after lunch when he was snagged by Ollie Potts off the bowling of Matthew Potts.

These hands are thankfully still part of a living body - I was taking a little stroll before taking my seat for this session and was nearly impaled by a patio umbrella that had been taken by a gust.

That is as good a session as New Zealand could have hoped for. They've scored at almost four runs an over and Latham has found his form for the first time in the series, and Williamson is looking good as well.

And that concludes a very good session for New Zealand.

Tom Latham and Kane Williamson had to battle hard at the start of their innings, but were rewarded for their patience once they got themselves in and look to be in good touch.

A chastening afternoon for England, who will rue that drop by Joe Root shortly before the interval.
