  2. Eng 107-2published at 25 overs

Kane Williamson goes to his star man, Trent Boult, in search of a breakthrough.

And it almost does the trick. Ollie Pope pulls to fine leg but it doesn't have the legs. Neil Wagner does superbly in the field though to stop the boundary. It was it flat and with power.

Ben: My word. He did it again...at 100-2...chasing 296 in the fourth innings...on 22 off 37 balls. Joe Root.

  4. Eng 104-2published at 24 overs

Wagner takes a little tumble in his follow through. But he's back on his feet.

Back to that Joe Root madness. He played a similar shot at Trent Bridge to Tim Southee. He had a wide stance there. But today he was on one knee as he scooped it up. Mesmerising.

I should probably get over it. But I won't.

Four from Bracewell's over. This is looking like a healthy England run-chase at the moment.

I'm still reeling from that Root shot. We'll have that clipped up for you soon enough.

    That is, quite frankly, ridiculous.

Good grief. That is an extraordinary piece of improvisation.

  9. Eng 100-2published at 22 overs

    OH COME ON, JOE!

This is utterly, utterly ridiculous. Joe Root reverse scoops Neil Wagner for six. How on earth do you practise that? At what point does he decide to play that? I just don't get it. But I love it.

The New Zealand fielders are laughing. Wagner covers his lips with his hand and mutters something to Root. It's all in good jest.

Sarah Debenham: Just a thought, not to be a party pooper but those in fancy dress that are running around, or others with beach balls, don’t they find the cricket interesting enough?

  11. Eng 93-2published at 21 overs

    Target 296

Shot! Ollie Pope clears the front leg and places a Bracewell delivery, which kept quite low, through the gap in the off side.

Jack Rule: This changing of the ball business is becoming a joke now. Stop with these silly rings. Unless the ball is visibly mis-shaped teams should be told to get on with it and bowl. Can’t keep changing the ball just because you don’t like it.

  13. Eng 89-2published at 20 overs

The ball may not be doing too much but England need to be a bit watchful here.

Neil Wagner reels in Ollie Pope, who is forward. A thick leading edge sends the ball aerially towards mid-off, but just short.

    One from the over.

Where is slip?! Daryl Mitchell is standing about four feet too wide.

  15. Eng 88-2published at 19 overs

    Pope 31, Root 16

Ah - that's nice from Rooty. He plays a crafty premeditated reverse sweep which is out of reach of slip and races through to the boundary.

Almost! Bracewell finds some sharp bounce and a hint of turn. Joe Root is on the back foot and sends an edge looping up past the wicketkeeper. Daryl Mitchell is a bit wide at slip. Had he not been, it could have been a chance. Four more.

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

This change of ball is doing exactly what the other ball did - it's going gun barrel straight.

New Zealand need some swing in the air to have a chance. It's the only thing they have.

  17. Eng 79-2published at 18 overs

Wagner continues after the drinks break, but not even he can find some swing. Plenty of tempters there for Root but twice he drives straight to the fielder.

The Kiwi goes straighter and Root's is not one to be deceived by the variation. Flicked through leg side for four.

Graham Rogers: Basic flaw with Zak Crawley is that his front foot is going straight down leg/middle and leg on every shot. It’s not going to the offside towards the ball. His head needs to go towards the ball so his front foot follows.

Dangerous times this for New Zealand because if England can push on in these 24 overs this evening they will break the back of this chase.
