Outstanding delivery. You mention the uneven bounce - at times when there is a little bit of moisture, it can be up and down until it dries out.

That really lifted and reared. Root has given the pitch a very suspicious look. It really did lift and there is a rare duck for Joe Root.

    Erm....

Jasprit Bumrah finds a little bit of extra bounce and it surprises Joe Root, who is looking to work through his trademark third area, and gets a feather through to Rishabh Pant.

Root has a prod at the pitch on his way off. That really caught him by surprise.

No footwork from Roy and from that seventh stump line, he's dragged it back in.

Another disappointing end for Jason Roy, I'm afraid. In his disgust, he's picked the ball up and he's thrown it to the umpire for the Indians.

He's dragged that a long, long way from outside off stump.

    Roy b Bumrah 0 (Eng 6-1)

    Jason Roy's difficult summer continues.

The Surrey opener goes a big booming drive and a thick inside edge - after a little bit of in-movement from Jasprit Bumrah - crashes into the stumps.

Roy is fuming. He picks up the ball for the Indian side and throws it back to the umpire as he trudges off. He yanks off his gloves in anger and has a right angry expression on his face.

He waited, played it late and picked the gap. The Jonny Bairstow show rolls on.

  9. Eng 6-0published at 1 over

Mohammed Shami struggles with his line a little bit and Jason Roy sneaks through for a leg bye before Rishabh Pant has to fly down away for a diving catch to gather a leg-side wide.

Shot! Jonny Bairstow gets up and running with a cut through to the point boundary. Gorgeous timing and placement.

Oh. Good comeback. Mohammed Shami squares Bairstow up a little bit and beats the outside edge.

    Lively start.

Not too differently to how he played in the Tests.

The players are out in the middle and Mohammed Shami is going to bowl the first over.

It'll be Jason Roy on strike.

England captain Jos Buttler, speaking to Test Match Special: "There may be a little bit of sideways movement early which is why both teams wanted to bowl first. But we'll still look to play our game and be aggressive.

"It's really good to be able to welcome back not just some of our best players but some of the best players in the world."

It's really good to see the Test match guys back. You look at the batting line-up now with Root, Stokes and Bairstow back and it is so strong.

Jacob Wadsworth: Just seems unnecessary to have seven bowling options, should be using this series to have a look at Brook, haven't seen anywhere near enough of him so far for England.

As Matt has mentioned it's fairly cloudy at The Oval at the moment, but based on this forecast we shouldn't see any interruptions.

India captain Rohit Sharma: "There is some grass cover on the pitch and it's overcast as well. But the sun will be out in some time as well. We wanted to have a score in front of us.

"Shami and Bumrah, those guys can swing the ball up front and that is something we thought of as well, put the brakes on England as well.

"We understand the importance of playing in overseas conditions and we want to do well. We want to come out here and see what we can do, how we can improve.

"We've got a couple of injuries in our squad. Virat Kohli has a niggle so he won't play."
