That's your lot from us, folks, after a damp day at Lord's.

South Africa can be delighted with their work and will hope to wrap up the England innings quickly tomorrow. Ollie Pope remains their biggest obstacle to achieving that.

You can watch highlights from the play that was possible today from 19:00 BST on BBC Four and iPlayer.

We'll be back tomorrow to see if England can fight back, be it with bat or ball, and the forecast is significantly better but, for now, I'll leave you with Stephan Shemilt's report as the Proteas quickly demonstrated the challenge they will provide to England's bold new era of Test cricket.

South Africa got into the bowlers soon after lunch as Nortje got his third. The seamer nipped one back in to Ben Foakes and the England right-hander could only send the ball careering into his stumps via an inside edge.

England six down and only the rain, which arrived a couple of balls later, spared them further damage.

Ollie Pope, who remains unbeaten on 61, and Ben Stokes counter-attacked for England but after putting on 45 in good time, the skipper fell to the last ball before lunch. A second wicket for Nortje.

Jonny Bairstow was unable to continue his blistering Test form of 2022. Anrich Nortje made sure of that as he uprooted the Yorkshireman's middle stump with a searing 93mph delivery.

Joe Root came in to try and rectify the situation but, for once, even he could not dig England out of a hole.

He started well enough before left-armer Marco Jansen trapped him lbw. It was reviewed by Root and although ball-tracking showed it would only have grazed leg stump, the on-field decision stood and the former captain had to go.

The rain has won out then at Lord's to end what has been a fairly dismal first day for England, who will resume tomorrow on 116-6.

After being put in to bat, England lost openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley early as Kagiso Rabada made the new ball talk...

  7. Play abandoned for the daypublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 17 August 2022

It was only a matter of time and we've now had word that there will be no more play today.

The players will be back to try again tomorrow but stay with us for reaction to what play we have had on day one at Lord's.

The wickets kept tumbling with Jonny Bairstow comprehensively bowled by Anrich Nortje, a rare failure for the England man this summer.

Ben Stokes was next to go, edging into the clip cordon from the last ball before lunch, ending a 45-run counter-attacking stand with Ollie Pope.

That was Nortje's second and he claimed his third early in the afternoon session. Ben Foakes was flat footed as he chopped the ball onto his stumps to leave England six down and in real trouble...

As for what we've seen at Lord's, it has been all South Africa, pretty much from the moment Dean Elgar won the toss and chose to bowl.

Kagiso Rabada promptly got rid of Alex Lees and Zak Crawley before Marco Jansen removed Joe Root lbw - a very, very close one...

Andy Gould: So, given that whenever it rains during an Old Trafford Test, we get people asking why we're playing there, can we ask a similar question about Lord's? Glorious sunshine in Manchester today!

Rookery Mike: Never mind a Thunder Buddy, in a storm I’d want to be with Brolly Pope.

Ron: Mark Wood would surely be the best Thunder Buddy ever?!

JG: Thunder buddy: Zak Crawley. I'd spend the entire time teaching him how to actually play a forward defence. And I'm hopeless!

  16. Early tea being takenpublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 17 August 2022

Sensible decision. Early tea taken, fewer overs lost. Although we would require it to stop raining for that to matter.

There's no danger of that any time soon...
