As a South Africa seamer I really don't mind seeing this from Ben Stokes.
If that's the way you want to play then please be my guest.
Great celebration from Anrich Nortje, by the way. He could not have yelled any louder.
Right then. How will Ben Stokes play this? Well, he charges a 94mph (!!!!) delivery almost immediately and gets into a horribly ugly tangle trying to block the resulting yorker out. Hmm.

That was a retro Jonny Bairstow dismissal, from back in the days when his gate was always open.
Jonny Bairstow could not have got off the pitch any quicker if he tried. He's out of the Long Room by the time Ben Stokes has wandered down from the dressing room.

Plenty of emotion from Nortje. He has struggled to find his rhythm this morning but that was bullseye.
Bairstow b Nortje 0 (Eng 55-4)
WOOF.
I'm afraid Jonny Bairstow has been dismissed in classic Jonny Bairstow fashion - big boomin drive, missed, stumps absolutely splattered. It's just a casual 93mph from Anrich Nortje, who hasn't been at his best, but Bairstow has missed it by a mile.

Ian Comer: It's pretty obvious the South African attack should be highly respected. How's Stokes gonna play today?
David Fisher: Difficult to watch as an England fan, but South Africa's bowling lineup is just so exciting. Rabada has long been my favourite (non-English) Test bowler and the variety, pace and hostility in the rest of the lineup is frankly terrifying.
That's another glorious shot from Ollie Pope, flicking Marco Jansen through mid-wicket for a couple of runs.
Pope then goes chasing after a leg-side delivery that the men behind the wicket like. I don't think Pope got bat to that, though, and Dean Elgar wisely opts against the review.
Ollie Pope works a single to end an expensive over.

That's the danger when you have pace on the ball, you have to hit the good areas. But Anrich Nortje gave a bit of width and Ollie Pope took full advantage.
These are vital runs for England as we know how dangerous they can be. Even with those early wickets South Africa have to stay disciplined with their bowling.
Back-to-back fours!
This one is even better, Ollie Pope standing tall and thrashing four through backward point. This has not been a good start from Nortje.
Shot!
Ollie Pope cracks his bat down on a wide delivery from Anrich Nortje and picks up four runs for his troubles.
Looking at the review, that delivery from Marco Jansen was just - and I mean just - tickling the leg stump.
Jonny Bairstow, the man for a counter-attack, has arrived out in the middle for England, and promptly edges his first ball just in front of the slip cordon.

It was a phenomenal start by Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, but it was so important for the first change bowlers to back that up.
An important first hour for South Africa.
As the players take a drink, here's how the two England openers fell a little earlier.

It is one of those where the ball is just shaving the top of leg stump.
That tops a really good first hour for South Africa.
Root lbw Jansen 8 (Eng 42-3)
Umpire's call! Joe Root must go!
A shake of the head from Root as he departs, but that just did enough to uphold the umpire's decision. There was a bit of shape back into him - some information that Root passes on to Jonny Bairstow as the two cross paths in the Long Room - and Root's head wasn't in the right place as he fell over slightly.
That's a huge wicket for South Africa.

It does nip back a bit...
I was a bit surprised that was given but I am notoriously rubbish at judging these.
It's full but maybe a bit leggy?
