That ball felt rapid. The lights are fully on and it is really grey and murky.

    Foakes b Nortje 6 (Eng 116-6)

Jags back and bowls him! It's a third for Anrich Nortje.

There has been plenty of seam movement all day and this one come in sharply to Ben Foakes, who is caught on the crease and the ball cannons into the stumps.

There may have been a thin inside edge, too, but the ball was already heading towards the pegs at some velocity.

  3. Eng 116-5published at 31 overs

Rabada follows Nortje's lead and tests Pope with a few banged-in deliveries.

Pope, again, isn't shy of taking on the bouncer and pulls again, more controlled this time and he gets two.

The floodlights are beaming down now. This feels like a great opportunity for South Africa to get into England.

  5. Eng 114-5published at 30 overs

The field is set for some short stuff and Nortje doesn't disappoint.

Pope takes it on and miscues the pull shot but the ball lands safely, perfectly into the gap between the two fielders on the rope.

Foakes is then hit on the hip before belatedly swaying clear of the last. Fiery from Nortje in the gloom at Lord's.

  6. Eng 112-5published at 29 overs

Pope gets two with a thick inside edge into the leg side as he aimed a drive through the covers.

It brings to mind a remark Herschelle Gibbs once made about former Proteas skipper Graeme Smith, a brilliant run-scorer but not always the most fluent of batters.

"He had a brilliant cover drive through mid wicket" was Gibbs' assessment.

Two more for Pope from the last after a chop down towards third is half-stopped at gully.

So much depends on this pair but Foakes has started quite well. His boundary sped away to the boundary.

  8. Eng 108-5published at 28 overs

A strangled appeal form the last as the ball slides down leg. Not out, replays show the ball just brushed Foakes' thigh pad on the way through to Verreyne.

South Africa knew it, too, no thought of a review.

  9. Eng 108-5published at 27.4 overs

Lovely shot from Foakes. A full, in-swinging delivery from Nortje and Foakes just seems to turn his wrists on it and the ball races away through mid wicket. Superb timing.

No surprise after that wicket just before lunch that Anrich Nortje will continue from the Pavilion End.

  11. Eng 104-5published at 27 overs

    Pope 54, Foakes 1

The wicket of Stokes was the last ball of the over - and the session - so it's Ollie Pope on strike to face Kagiso Rabada.

He defends the first ball of the afternoon into the off side and after a moment of hesitation, they scamper through for a quick single.

Ben Foakes is hit on the thigh a couple of times before getting off the mark with a single of his own and Pope drives nicely for two off the last.

Right then, it's almost time for the start of the afternoon session and the players are making their way back out to the middle, Ben Foakes joining Ollie Pope for England.

One more wicket and South Africa are into the bowlers...

The good news is that they are able to get out there at all. Some pretty nasty rain was forecast but - for now, at least - it is dry and we're ready to go again at Lord's.

  13. 'The public want to see England players have a go'published at 13:38 British Summer Time 17 August 2022

Here's more from interim director of England cricket Andrew Strauss to TMS: "We still have a lot of work to do with this Test team, we are not the complete team by any means. But what they have been able to do is reconnect with the public and play in way people like to watch. It has been a great fillip for the game of Test cricket.

"We may have lost one or two of those games earlier this summer but I don’t think the public would have minded. They want to see England players have a go, not devil may care but trying to win and if you lose in the process of that then that’s ok.”

  14. 'It is about hearts and minds and emotion'published at 13:36 British Summer Time 17 August 2022

Interim director of England cricket Andrew Strauss to TMS: “In some ways it is hard to rationalise (the change in form of the Test side) other that every team has its nadir and there is always a will to move on from where you’ve been. And our team has never been as bad as people made it out to be.

“But what’s been incredible is whatever systems you have in place, and you should have systems to develop players, it is about hearts and minds and emotion. People believing in something and that’s what Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes have done unbelievably well.

“Let’s simplify the game, be really clear in how we are looking to play and back our players to play that way. And if you consistency hear that from the top it really does resonate. It takes the pressure off the players and we have seen that incredible lift of those dark storm clouds that were surrounding this team.”

It is the Ruth Strauss Foundation Test at Lord's this week and the ground will be going 'Red for Ruth' tomorrow.

Former England skipper Andrew Strauss has been talking to Test Match Special about the foundation, as well as the changes to the England Test side and his role as interim director of England cricket.

Pope and Ben Stokes put on 45 in double quick time with the captain playing some gorgeous strokes, mixed in with the occasion and often questionable skip down the track to the South Africa seamers - who were, to a man, fantastic.

But just as it seemed England might head off for a famously fancy - and apparently delicious - Lord's lunch, Nortje had Stokes caught in the slips with the last ball of the session.

    South Africa well on top.

The one ray of light for England in the morning session has been Ollie Pope.

After a typically frenetic start, he has knuckled down and made his way to a brisk half-century, his eighth in Tests, playing some lovely shots along the way.

Meanwhile, the summer of Bairstow took a turn for the worse when Jonny was comprehensively bowled by Anrich Nortje.

A big booming drive, a 93mph delivery whistling through the gate, middle stump out of the ground and England were 55-4.

Joe Root, so often England's saviour over the years, was tasked with another rescue mission but today wasn't his day.

A trademark late cut for four provided hope of another classic knock from the former skipper but he was given out lbw to Marco Jansen soon after - and that on-field decision cost him, umpire's call on review with the ball just tickling leg stump.

This is a big Test for Zak Crawley. The opener might be considered fortunate to have kept his place for the start of this series and he needs runs quickly if he is to keep it.

Unfortunately for him, it was a familiar story again this morning. A couple of lovely shots before having a nibble outside off and edging into the slips. Another wicket for Rabada...
