    BBC Test Match Special

Player of the match Kagiso Rabada, speaking to TMS: "We thought it was going to go to day five here, but such is the game of cricket. What more can I say?

"The wicket was doing quite a bit on day one. There was nice bounce, good carry and the ball was nipping around. there wasn't much swing but there was enough bounce and pace in the wicket.

"I'm really glad I could be fit for this game. I've had a good game, I think, so I'm glad I was fit.

On England's bowling at the tailenders: "I don't think it's for me to comment on that. Opposition come with whatever tactics they come with and we have to answer the questions they are asking.

"I don't think it's my place to speak on the English tactics. After yesterday, we were expecting it [short bowling], definitely.

"In Test cricket there is alway tension between the two sides. That's what makes it even more of a great game. It's good to get the blood going"

Playing cricket from behind the eight ball, you can only do it so much. And when you come up against a high quality attack you will lose more often than not. I can pretty much guarantee that.

I don't think it was a question of England's batting being over aggressive. The gulf I saw in this match was between the two bowling units and South Africa looked more controlled, disciplined and more potent.

They're quicker, they got the ball to swing more, they've got fantastic variety and they were all on top of their game. Nortje was a bit expensive but, blimey, he's bowling at 90mph and getting key batsmen out. He had a golden spell today and took key wickets in the first innings.

You can afford for him to go at five an over every now and again because you've got support for him. You can let him go and bowl fast. It was thrilling.

England's batting is fragile but it wasn't as if they were all caught mid-off playing terrible shots. I was more concerned with some of England's activities in the field in this match.

There is a lot of credit to be given to this South Africa attack, they really back each other up. The heat and intensity they bring, they talk about that a lot in the dressing room.

That opening partnership with the bat as well, that really set things up.

All boxes ticked by South Africa in that first Test match.

Dean Elgar's post-match interview will be interesting.

He said England's aggressive approach would leave them with egg on their faces and he has been proven right.

South Africa came here determined and that is as convincing a win as you'll find against England in England.

They've played the better cricket from day one. There was a lot of chat in the media before this match but Dean Elgar and his bowlers have backed up the talk.

It has been a comprehensive shellacking over England by South Africa inside two days of actual cricket. They have outplayed England in every department.

England had no answers and finally they have lost a Test match this summer. It has been a pretty much perfect bowling performance from South Africa.

South Africa win by innings and 12 runspublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 19 August 2022

The jubilant South Africa players are cheering and hugging in the middle and as well they might. That was an absolutely superb all round performance, capped off by a devastating spell of bowling that has ripped through England this afternoon.

    Crunch.

It is a full, swinging delivery from Marco Jansen that is just too good for James Anderson and the ball clatters into the stumps.

That is as convincing as it gets.

Just that extra bit of pace that South Africa's bowlers have has caused batsmen to make mistakes.

We've said it for a while but without Archer, Wood and Stone, England's attack lacks that genuine pace.

  12. Eng 149-9published at 37 overs

    That's a pretty damning statistic.

Jack Leach manages to fend off three balls from Rabada.

    He survives, for now.

England have now faced 490 balls in this match. Unless they can face another 18, it will be their third shortest match as batting team in a home Test in innings they've completed.

I can tell you, when you play those warm-up games, it's very rare that you see a guy bowling at full tilt. But the pace attack have really rocked up here at Lord's.

Pre Baz-Ball - 1 win from 17, Test cricket a dying art in England. Since Baz-Ball - 4/4 wins, excitement every time England play. Bit of perspective required when it doesn't work, given it's predecessor is the immediate alternative...

England are on the brink. It is the only way Stokes could play but his side are one wicket away from losing inside two days worth of actual cricket.

It has all happened in a bit of a rush.
