David Emanuel: Is it my imagination or do we do better when we have rhyming batsmen in a partnership?

Simple geometry tells you that is not out. But it is worth checking.
South Africa wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne is shaking his head. But the side angle from the TV conclusively shows it hit the ground after hitting the edge of Ben Foakes' bat.
As you were.

That's a strange one. It looked like it went underneath Foakes' bat. Verreynne caught it cleanly but did it bounce?
Ben Foakes jabs his bat down like a man putting a pneumatic drill back into position on a particularly difficult bit of concrete to keep out a Lungi Ngidi yorker.
A couple of balls later and South Africa have talked the umpires into checking a possible catch which looks like it's a bump ball off Foakes' bat. Soft single is not out.

South Africa will be hopeful the new ball will do the business, but you feel they have allowed Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes to settle into their work after lunch.

Darren: That's a big half-century for Ben Foakes. Some people have questioned his place in the team, but he came in today after Nortje had taken a couple of wickets and he's stood up and got himself a very good fifty. Well batted.
Simon Harmer called upon by Dean Elgar and hustles though a over.
One run from it.
Here's that Ben Stokes review from earlier. He's opened his arms up since then.

There's a very warm reception for Ben Foakes, who has played really well. He has done more than just keep his captain company.
Andy Zaltzman
BBC Test Match Special statistician
Ben Foakes' 50 came from 116 balls, with five fours. He has four scores of 50 or more in Tests, one of which he converted into a century.
Lungi Ngidi has hands on his head, and chews on his tongue, after beats the outside edge of Ben Foakes' Next ball and Foakes has his half-century with a punch through gully.
Nicely done.

Ben Ellis: Ben Stokes batting properly is an absolutely gorgeous sight!
Sean Bulpitt: Great to see Ben Stokes back to batting like we know he can. Controlled aggression and read the situation perfectly. Captain's knock.
Here's another of Stokes sixes from a little earlier.

That one might have gone into the South African dressing room! It's a terrific shot and a massive blow. It's classic Stokes.

BBC Test Match Special statistician
Ben Stokes had 41 from his first 98 balls. He has scored 43 from his next 34 deliveries.
Ben Stokes is going through his repertoire of shots, as Keshav Maharaj is sent packing for back-to-back boundaries.
First he muscles a bottom-handed drive through the covers for four. Then the England skipper gently skips down the pitch and whacks the left-arm spinner over the top of his head and into the stands for six. He's on to 85 now.
He might get to a hundred before Ben Foakes, 48, gets to fifty at this rate.
Vernon Philander
Former South Africa fast bowler on BBC Test Match Special
If South Africa can open up an end here, the new ball could be a lot more effective against the lower order.
Ben Stokes is grinning after pinching the strike at the end of an eventful over from Lungi Ngidi following a one-handed flail to square leg for a single.

Oh, that's a big nick.
