Their next challenge awaits in Pakistan in December.

But there is still plenty of cricket to come. England women's two Twenty20s and three ODIs against India to come, and then the men play seven T20s against Pakistan starting on September 20.

For now, you can read Stephan Shemilt's match report of today's win.

And highlights from Today at the Test will be on BBC Two and iPlayer at 19:00 BST tonight.

More from England head coach Brendon McCullum to BBC TMS: "They [James Anderson and Stuart Broad] are smiling as well, which is nice to see. They are quite incredible humans really. For them to still have that desire and determination to not just get better and perform for themselves but also to pass on information to give other guys freedom in the changing room and in the fight and competition makes them pretty unique characters. I think those guys have still got a lot to offer in the next few years and hopefully that is where there head is at as well because they are two of the all-time greats.

"My job at the start of the summer was to softly get to know these guys and work out what makes them tick and where they see themselves, not just this summer but moving forward. That is a process that will continue but I've just enjoyed getting to know them all and I thought English cricket had a lot of talent but it's got a lot more than I thought. I knew these guys were good but they are a lot better than I thought and it is a very privileged position to be in to go and help these guys go out and there and perform. It has been an absolute thrill."

More from England head coach Brendon McCullum to BBC TMS: "I thought Ben [Stokes] would be good but I didn't realise he'd be this good. We knew each other a little bit but our relationship has certainly blossomed over the last couple of months and I've enjoyed spending a lot of time with him and working closely with him. He is an incredible human being actually and we've seen his life documented on tape recently and his own struggles and what he's been able to achieve as well but one thing about him is that he is a genuine, authentic person, who loves being able to give guys freedom to be the best versions of themselves on the cricket field.

"That is where he's really resonated with this group. That is why we've seen guys who probably came into this summer with some question marks over their head be able to go out there and perform and look just as good as any international cricketer going around.

"What we saw from Zak [Crawley] in the last innings is what he's capable of achieving. We've got to be careful in this country that we don't try and catch form with selections. If you think they are good enough and have a high ceiling then give them the opportunity and give them time to work it out. Zak is one of those guys and he'll learn a lot from this innings. He's had these moments before in his Test career but I think this process he's gone through over the last couple of months will hold him in good stead. I'm sure he'll grow and develop from where he is."

England head coach Brendon McCullum to BBC Test Match Special: "The way the guys have brought into the style that the captain has asked for, a style that is authentic to him, and the way he leads, and while the results have bee fantastic, the mentality shift has been quite amazing. It has been something quite special to be a part of to be honest.

"It is definitely more Ben than me, he is the leader of the side. The way he plays cricket and the way he lives his life is exactly how he leads a group of men as well. The guys have got right in behind, they know he is going to leave it all out there for them, and his messaging has been outstanding. It has been consistent about trying to entertain and ensure that people that pay money to come and turn on their TVs and listen on the radio have been entertained. Test cricket is such an amazing game and it needs that relevance and support and that is where the messaging from Ben and where his head is, and ultimately you want to get the results because that is how you are judged, but fundamentally our job is to entertain and make sure everyone goes home happy."

Finally from Ben Stokes to BBC TMS: "James Anderson and Stuart Broad are just important to the whole group with the experience that they have and the knowledge they have of bowling is just great for the younger lads that we've got coming through. It is absolutely priceless. It is great to have them in the team and as I've said before I can't really say when it is going to end because while they are still performing you can't really not pick them.

"Jonny [Bairstow] has been incredible. He's been a huge reason for why we stand here at the end of the summer with the success that we've had. Batting at five is a position that can be quite difficult to read, you can be 200-3 or 30-3, but he's played at the same tempo throughout the summer. The hundreds he's got have been frightening to watch and he's really come of age as a Test batter this player. He's really taken confidence from the clarity that we've been able to give this changing room.

"Me and Brendon has been pretty simple. He constantly says we're not here for a haircut and he just thinks what a gig. You've just got to enjoy these moments and you've got to enjoy playing international cricket and if you can't walk off enjoying what you've done, even during the bad days - the bad days make the good days even better. Failure is why you succeed because you don't want to feel failure, you always want to succeed but it is never going to happen that way. Failure keeps you grounded. I have really loved this summer, it has been really enjoyable and I'm glad we've reaped the rewards as a team."

  6. Postpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

More from England captain Ben Stokes to BBC TMS: "With Jimmy, Broady and Robbo it is about getting the most of them when the ball is still hard. You'll have seen throughout the summer that one of them bowls a short spell, the other bowls a longer spell and then I bring the third seamer to follow on and the other opening bowler can then come back on. It is just about managing them and getting the most out of them and then bring myself into the game when they've bowled a few overs themselves.

"If we end up winning I don't mind if the bat or ball dominates. That is where sport is. Sport is always set up for a winner and loser and regardless of whatever conditions you face you've got to think about the best way possible of you getting the win. On that wicket it was always fairly obvious there was going to be a ball that had your name on it so we had to decide pretty quickly about how to go out and play. We didn't feel like hanging around and trying to bat time was the best way to go about it. It was about trying to put their best ball under as much pressure as we possibly could. The way we bounced back after their opening partnership yesterday, in the two hours after lunch, was phenomenal. It really brought us back into the game."

  8. 'A massive learning curve for a lot of us'published at 12:33 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

South Africa captain Dean Elgar to BBC Test Match Special: "The series has been disappointing and there is a little bit of frustration. We came here with high hopes, but knowing we'd played a really tough series. The way we started at Lord's made us think that momentum would be on our side but it turned quickly at Manchester and it was tough to get the momentum back on our side again. We are quietly disappointed at the end of the day.

"The nature of the wickets and weather that we've had around [have contributed to the short-nature of the games]. We've always been up against really tough batting conditions, in saying that England's bowlers will always execute that to a fine art as well. It was a massive learning curve for a lot of us, there is a lot of young guys in our batting line-up and I'm sure they've been exposed to what Test cricket is really like and what the standard is about and the intensity of play. In a sense that is positive but it is still disappointing to not get the results in our favour."

  9. Postpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

More from England coach Brendon McCullum to Sky Sports: "I didn't actually want the job but now I've got it I am loving it! It is certainly different to what I've done before and I'm very lucky to work with some of the best players in the world. I looked at English cricket and thought there was an immense amount of talent but hadn't quite realised just how much there is and how good these players are.

"It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside them and I've particularly enjoyed working along side the skipper [Stokes]. He is an incredible human being, A great thinker of the game and his messaging been excellent as well. I thought he would be good, but I didn't realise he would be this good.

"When you are thrust into a position of leadership you see how naturally it fits someone and it a wonderful fit for Ben. You can see how much the guys are rallying behind him. We are very lucky to have him as out captain."

Gary Kirsten would have been an easy choice for Rob Key. England would not have played in this way under him.

We've got to say that Rob Key made a huge decision by appointing Brendon McCullum. It was a huge call and not one we really saw coming.

It need seems the perfectly obvious choice and I'm thinking 'why didn't I think of that?'. It is a perfectly courageous decision to go with a left-field decision.

  12. Postpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

England coach Brendon McCullum to Sky Sports: "It's fantastic. At the start of the summer we had huge aspirations but we knew the challenges we had to meet. New Zealand are world test champions, India were pretty hot when we came up against them and South Africa were to of the World Test championship.

"So we knew the size of the challenge but we almost wanted to take results out of play and play the style of cricket that's authentic to Stokes' leadership and the players within the squad and I thought we executed it nicely.

"We are well aware you are going be judged by results but for us it is a little bit bigger than that. You look at Test cricket around the world and how important it is to the fans and those who have played the game before. For us is was a matter of bringing a bit of enjoyment back and bringing a bit of relevance back to a game that has been under a bit of pressure of late. So that was the goal and will continue to be so going forward."

  13. Postpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

England captain Ben Stokes to BBC Test Match Special: "Throughout the whole series there hasn't been an individual standout performance and when it comes to a team sport you always to be able to turn to different individuals at different times and hope they can deliver for it and whether it has been with the bat or ball it has been someone different stepping up on different occasions and that is what you need to win a series against someone like South Africa.

"It has been very pleasing to be able to captain this side. The lads' mindset and attitude towards the whole summer has been fantastic. The fact that different people have put their hand up and do something at different times in the Test matches has been great.

"I'll never forget walking down the stairs on day three to complete silence from 30,000 people. The silence was deafening. I've never experienced anything like it before and it was seriously special to be part of it. To sing the anthem with the little change was special again. I will never forget that day."

Ollie Robinson is one of the most natural bowlers I've ever seen. He makes bowling look easy and he's got this lovely, rhythmical run-up and such an easy, rhythmical action, with a high release. He makes it look incredibly easy.

The only thing he does wrong is bowl too many no-balls. He is taking too many wickets from no-balls and it is something he's got to work on. He'll crack that.

  16. Postpublished at 12:14 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

More from Ben Stokes: “For me, it’s about the clarity of messaging. Me and Brendon are the guys leading this, and I said to the dressing room that the guys delivering the message can only do so much so I really thanked my team, my backroom staff and everyone that we've managed to play like this. This game here being shorter, our main aim was to get a result we owed that to ourselves and the nation for supporting us all summer.

“We will always continue to play in a way to entertain and look at the positive side of cricket."

On Zak Crawley and Alex Lees: “It’s very important to allow guys time to go and perform rather than not giving them enough time and make them feel under pressure that they have to get a big score right away. You see how Ollie Pope has gone out, for example, he’s showed us what he’s capable of but also the style he’s done it in, but you’ve got to give a lot of credit to Zak and Lees. Opening in England is really hard, even one of the greatest Alastair Cook would say that.

“Yes, they’ve not got the runs they have liked but don’t underestimate how well they’ve set the tone for us when we’ve needed it.

“Jimmy and Broad are just phenomenal. To have two of the greatest bowlers ever in my team, I just feel so blessed to share a dressing room with them. I’m 31 and I get called old! They keep turning up, they leave everything out there, they are huge credit to themselves and the game and a lot of young cricketers will look up to them.”

Player of the Match Ollie Robinson to BBC Test Match Special: "It is really pleasing to put in this performance and get the series win. It is my first series win in an England shirt and it has been a great week and a great few weeks to be back around the lads.

"It is a very enjoyable, free-flowing environment. I think Baz [McCullum] and Stokesy just oozed that confidence in the players and they give you that sort of extra lift when you need it. It is just really enjoyable to a part of and you can see from when we're on the field, we've all got massive smiles on our faces and are laughing and it is a really enjoyable place to play cricket, and I think that is why the performances and results are coming."

  18. 'England have a very good chance of beating Australia'published at 12:08 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

With James Anderson, Stuart Broad, the Dukes ball and the mindset that Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes have put in this England team I think they have got a very good chance of beating Australia next summer now.

  19. Postpublished at 12:07 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

England Player of the Series and captain Ben Stokes: "I'm delighted, it's been a great series for us as a team. It has been one of those series where we haven't had many individual standout performances, but different people have put their hand up for us throughout and that's what you want in team sport.

"You want to be able to turn to people at key times and break the game open with either bat or ball and that's what we've had throughout.

"The conditions that we've found ourselves in on day one, the toss has always been a good one to win. But when you do win it, you've still got to go out and execute your plans and when you lose the toss, you've got to counteract that. That's what Test cricket is about, who can do that best.

"When you've got the bowlers that we have, it's about trying to manage them at the start of an innings when the ball is doing its most, and not taking too much out of them, and then bringing myself into the game at an appropriate time when they've had a few good spells. It's about understanding when I need to get the most out of them and they have been phenomenal all summer."

  20. Postpublished at 12:07 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

More from Elgar: "You have to do what's best to try and win the Test. It didn't work for us but I have to give the bowlers a lot of credit, they did everything that was asked of them. But it boiled down to our batting. The wickets are going to do something over here, especially with the overheads and Dukes ball. You just have to dig in and it will get easier.

"I'm a big advocate when it comes to Test match cricket. The more the merrier. Hopefully we can get a few more fixtures in the next few years. It is a bit frustrating as we are not exposed to this level as much. It is a tough one but is out of the players' hands.

"England played pretty good Test cricket. I don't think there was anything out of the ordinary. You need to put scoreboard pressure on. If we were able to nail that department their style of play might have changed, but England did everything that had to do to secure a series win."
