Zak Crawley has been under the microscope for a lot of the summer but he has played well in the last two days.

If you think of the red-ball reset in the West Indies - James Anderson has taken 27 wickets at 17 this summer and Stuart Broad 29 wickets at 27. It looks a bit absurd now, doesn't it?

The reset happened in the first week of June, really. That is when it happened.

  2. Eng 124-1published at 22 overs

    Need 6 runs to win

A glorious cover drive from Zak Crawley races away for four runs. Another exquisite piece of timing.

And it's a no-ball from Rabada, which gifts England an extra run.

Ollie Pope has progressed this summer. At the moment, for the first time, he is nailed on as England's number three. He hasn't had a fantastic summer but he's scored enough runs and he's looked convincing. It looks like he relishes the challenge too.

  4. Eng 119-1published at 21.3 overs

    Need 11 runs to win

Another pull shot of authority from Pope, but this time it's brilliantly saved on the boundary by Ryan Rickelton as he dives full stretch to stop the ball with one hand. It was firmly struck so that is a fine effort.

There is still some zip in this pitch. It hasn't been a bad pitch but it has been a lively one.

  6. Eng 115-1published at 21 overs

    Need 15 runs to win

Pope looks really confident, having only faced seven balls. He would love the opportunity to hit the winning runs for England on his home ground.

That is an authoritative shot from Ollie Pope.

  8. Eng 115-1published at 20.5 overs

    Need 15 runs to win

Ollie Pope pulls Marco Jansen out to deep square for four. He timed that beautifully.

It would be remiss to not consider Alex Lees' place in the side before Pakistan and New Zealand this winter. You have to look at Lees and establish whether he is the man for the future.

  10. Eng 109-1published at 20 overs

    Need 21 runs to win

Ollie Pope gets a single from his first ball.

There will probably be questions over Alex Lees' place in England's line-up going into the winter.

Alex Lees' luck has run out. That is a good review.

That is very strange. It felt like the review came very late because players and Kagiso Rabada were walking back to their mark.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 19.5 overs

    Lees lbw b Rabada 39 (Eng 108-1)

South Africa have the breakthrough, and Alex Lees has to depart after several chances.

It was a late review from South Africa but a good one, as replays show the ball to be hitting leg stump. Kagiso Rabada looks relieved, as he had Lees dropped twice off his bowling and he didn't look too impressed with some of the shots Lees had been playing against him last night.

  14. South Africa reviewpublished at 19.5 overs

Kagiso Rabada thinks he has Alex Lees lbw. He's trapped on the back leg, so it looks a decent shout.

What strikes me is that every player, even the older guys, is saying how much they are enjoying it.

I would debate whether Alex Lees, who has changed his style a little bit, and Jack Leach have really improved.

I was looking through the team sheet last night and I reckon every single player has improved under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes this summer.

  17. Eng 108-0published at 19 overs

    Need 22 runs to win

Marco Jansen bowls tidily for the rest of the over, but he also looks frustrated with that missed chance.

  18. How's stat?!published at 11:07 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

    Andy Zaltzman
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

This will be the seventh consecutive Test won by the team bowling first this English summer. The most ever before that had been four.

I don't think Petersen even sighted that one.

  20. Eng 107-0published at 18.2 overs

    Need 23 runs to win

    Oh, almost another.

It should be a chance, but actually Keegan Petersen at second slip hasn't even got a hand to it. Lees flashes outside off stump and the ball flies over Petersen's head for four.

He looks completely bemused and signals that he just didn't pick the ball up at all.
