The century stand has come up in 17.2 overs - it is England's fastest century partnership for the opening wicket, beating the 19.5 overs that Crawley and Lees did it in against India at Edgbaston earlier in the summer.

  2. Eng 103-0published at 18 overs

    Need 27 runs to win

A flurry of singles bring England closer to their target. Kyle Verreynne shakes his head. It probably won't be a costly drop with such a small target, but they would have wanted to keep their standards high and make it as difficult as possible for England.

Alex Lees has been dropped six times this summer and that is also South Africa's third drop in 14 balls.

That is a vigorous drive. It wasn't an easy catch, but he would still expect to catch that with his gloves on.

    Eng 101-0

Alex Lees drives nicely out to the covers for two, but edges behind on his second ball and Kyle Verreynne drops a simple chance!

He had to dive but got two hands to it and that is a bad drop. Lees was dropped at slip first ball yesterday, also off Rabada, who does not look happy. It has been a poor performance in the field.

  6. Eng 98-0published at 17.1 overs

    Need 32 runs to win

Zak Crawley clips the ball off his pads down to fine leg for the first run of the day.

The players make their way out into the middle, South Africa with a huddle and some last words from captain Dean Elgar, while Lees and Crawley look as relaxed as you would expect with just 33 runs needed to win.

Crawley will face the first ball from Kagiso Rabada.

More from Joe Root to BBC TMS: "The circumstances and situation have been a great motivator for us. It has been a great opportunity for us to pay our respects as well and it would be really nice if we could finish it off in style and in an entertaining manner this morning as well.

"It was very frustrating not to be able to finish it off last night but I feel for the umpires. They are playing within the laws of the game and following the protocols but it just feels like common sense might prevail in that situation sometimes. If it had rained all day today that might not have been fair either. In the emotion of the game and being a player involved i nit you get caught up in it and we all wanted to see it finished last night.

"I've probably had my most enjoyable summer, it has been fantastic. To be able to play in the manner that we have, it is so much fun to do and be a part of, and it has been great to watch some of the other guys really step up as well, particularly in this series. There are younger batters, like Ollie Pope, who have delivered. It has been a real joy to watch and play around. It is easy to look past what Jonny [Bairstow] has done this summer with him not being around. All of the bowlers have regularly taken 20 wickets too. We have seen this team take some massive steps forward on the back of a difficult couple of years and that is a really exciting space to be part of."

The opening partnership between Crawley and Lees in the evening session was frenetic, with several dropped chances, missed run outs and reviews.

But Crawley played nicely to reach his first half-century of the summer from just 36 balls, before the umpires called the players off for bad light.

England's Joe Root on BBC Test Match Special: "The game was in the balance yesterday and it took a wonderful spell of bowling from the two senior lads [James Anderson and Stuart Broad] to really shift the momentum of the game. It is something that would be very easy to take for granted, we see them perform like that regularly, but when you look back in years to come we will recognise they are the two greatest seam bowlers statistically and they showed every bit of that yesterday.

"One of Ben's [Stokes] great characters as a leader is him showing what it means to perform for his team and for his players. To be able to do that [produce long spells] takes more than skill and fitness, it takes something else, and yet again he put in something very special for us to be in the position we're in right now."

It was another entertaining day yesterday as England started by losing their last three wickets quickly before bowling South Africa out again for just 169.

Here's the highlights in case you missed any of it.

  12. Welcomepublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

Good morning and welcome to the final day of the England men's summer.

It has been long, but certainly fun, and it looks certain to end with an England victory. On day five, they need just 33 runs to win with 10 wickets in hand.

Zak Crawley is unbeaten on 57 and Alex Lees on 32. They raced to 97-0 last night in pursuit of 130, so it might be over pretty quickly this morning based on their approach.
