South Africa captain Dean Elgar: "I have a lot of fond personal memories at the Oval but this was not the greatest Test match.

"I think what helped [in South Africa's win] at Lord's was a good first innings with the bat. We need to be point blank about it: we haven't executed the runs like we should. First innings runs are so important in the UK and we failed in that department.

"We had some really tough selections decisions but we had the guys on the bench so thought it best to utilise them. It didn't work this game but it was a valuable experience for the guys. A lot of learning going forward for the players."

It does help home sides these days that sides have little to no preparation before Test series. South Africa had more than most but New Zealand had virtually none and India had that one strange game at Grace Road against Leicestershire, which was basically a knock around. You do have to take that kind of thing into account.

When Brendon McCullum was appointed coach back in May though, it was a light bulb being turned on. We know him pretty well, I've worked him, watching him play and I just thought 'yes'. If there was someone who was going to come in and take this broken team by the scruff of the neck and make them have his thought process of being fun and from that moment I thought 'yes, of course'. It could only be Ben Stokes as captain - they are kindred spirits really.

It began frantically and it did have to mature a little bit, if you think of the way that Stokes got out in the first couple of games.

South Africa Player of the Series Kagiso Rabada: "It seemed like every game was decided from the toss. We won it at Lord's and things went our way, but looking in hindsight we will take a lot of learnings out of this series.

"We are a young team, including myself, but there is a lot for us to take from this. We will look to get better moving forward, and get some more wins.

"I injured myself in the second Twenty20 at Cardiff, and I wasn't sure if i was going to make it to this Test series. But I am very glad I did, and I am very grateful to the medical staff for helping me.

"It's very exciting to see the talent we have in our fast bowling department but overall as a team, there is so much talent and we've just got to get used to playing together as a team, and then the world is our oyster."

Player of the match Ollie Robinson: "It's been a really enjoyable comeback for me and the team. The experience over the last few weeks have been really enjoyable and it's great to be with the lads again.

"Its nice to get where I am but don't feel like I am the finished article. There's lot of work to do, there's a tough winter ahead so I will keep pushing on.

"The environment is a great place to thrive, it is really enjoyable. You can see that with how we are playing with a smile on our faces and having a great time out there.

"I think with Stokesy you always get complete honesty which at times is what I needed. Luckily it worked off the back of that.

"It was definitely a helpful surface, it always had a bit of carry. Tall bowlers tend to do well here so it was nice for me to do well this week."

Jonny Bairstow is named England's Player of the Summer for his prolific run-scoring, but he is not there to collect his award because of his leg injury.

He scored 681 runs at an average of 75.66, including four centuries.

But the Player of the Match award is given to Ollie Robinson for his seven wickets in the match.

The margin of victories is the worrying thing for me. It has been massive in every game in the series.

It all boils down to the first innings. It has been a key innings in every game.

It almost became a talking point that if you win the toss and bowl first you win the game. It is something both sides will want to turn around.

You have to give a lot of credit to England for the way they turned it round after the first game.

Away from the batting, it has been an outstanding Test match for England's bowlers. Ollie Robinson slotted straight back into the side in style, while Stuart Broad and James Anderson are bowling as well as they ever have.

Anderson has taken 27 wickets this summer and Broad 29.

It has been a massive turnaround from England. They have gone back after the first Test and realised that this South Africa attack isn't one that you can bully and play in a loose manner.

Throughout the series they have let South Africa back into the game by playing some loose shots but there will be a bit of a reality check for them, and if they can be more clinical in moments they can really take the game away from oppositions.

There will be some pressure off Zak Crawley after his 69 not out to lead England to victory, but there will still be question marks over the opening partnership, and perhaps more over Alex Lees now as England look ahead to the winter.

You have to say, even with England's frailties in the batting line-up, it does look superior to South Africa's.

The ball has moved around a little bit and the lights have been on a fair bit. The likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad have taken a lot of wickets quickly they haven't given away many runs in between but Kagiso Rabada has taken a lot of wickets but he has conceded quite a lot against aggressive batting.

South Africa just couldn't find enough runs. It has been an engrossing Test match.

England have won their sixth Test match of the summer - it is the first time that has happened since 2004.

Who on earth would have predicted that among the wreckage of the winter? It is truly remarkable.

They have beaten the World Test champions, they've beaten India and now they've beaten the current leader in the World Test Championship.

Crawley and Ollie Pope share a big hug as they seal England's win before shaking hands with South Africa's players, who look understandably disappointed.

Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum are full of smiles on the England balcony. It has been a remarkable turnaround for the Test team this summer.

  16. ENGLAND WIN BY NINE WICKETSpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

Zak Crawley hits another lovely cover drive to the ropes, and that seals another win for England! He finishes unbeaten on 69 from 57 balls.

They take the series 2-1, and it took them just over five overs this morning. Another entertaining Test match comes to an end, and so does England's men's summer.

Oh, that is a nasty one. That might have stung him a little bit. He's worn it around the shoulder.

I'm not quite sure why he thought that shot was a good idea.

Ollie Pope tries to reverse sweep Marco Jansen, which would be a fine effort if he pulled it off.

However, he top-edges the ball into his helmet.

Still, Ben Stokes applauds it from the balcony.
