Good news from Edgbaston. The rain has stopped and, provided it stays away, there will be a pitch inspection in a little over 20 minutes' time.

The ground staff are already working away to get the water off the covers.

    Thanks, Tom.

I'm hopeful that we'll have some cricket soon but then that was the case on each of the past two days covering the women's Test match at Taunton.

In total I had a combined 15 overs to write about in roughly seven hours. The rest was weather updates. So not a great record, really... But it couldn't be that bad for a third day in a row, could it?

  5. Postpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

It's time for me to take break, but I will leave you in the more than capable hands of Sam Drury.

Fingers crossed he will have some actual cricket to write about very soon.

England squad for ODI series: Jos Buttler (capt, wk), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Craig Overton, Matthew Parkinson, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey.

  8. 'There is no red ball in my bag at the moment'published at 12:34 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

Jos Buttler on BBC Test Match Special

On Ben Stokes: "Absolutely, I'm really keen for Ben to be involved in T20 cricket. As with everyone, we need to be careful with how we manage people's workloads. But in any format of the game, you want Ben in your team."

On he possibility of opening in Test matches: "I thought someone had written the wrong story, to be honest. I don't think there is much merit in that. It was Kumar [Sangakkara], wasn't it? Maybe he was just promoting Rajasthan Royals openers! I've just been enjoying watching the Test side recently. There is no red ball in my bag at the moment."

  9. 'The capability is there to score 500'published at 12:31 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

Jos Buttler on BBC Test Match Special

On pushing boundaries: "What has been spoken about in the last few years is about not setting boundaries, pushing the limits and we've got a number of players in there who will keep pushing those boundaries. There is a very healthy competition for places and trying to name a squad is tough."

On the 500 barrier: "The capability is there to score 500. It is very similar to what you're seeing with Ben [Stokes] at the moment, taking the shackles off. In terms of learning from Eoin, it has always been 'this is how we're going to play' and sticking to that approach.

"If you're asking people to be aggressive and not set limitations, it is important how you play yourself. As long I as continue to play in that fashion, hopefully I can inspire others to play in the same vein."

  10. 'Morgan has always been a selfless leader'published at 12:28 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

Jos Buttler on BBC Test Match Special

On Eoin Morgan retiring: "He's been very clear that when the time was right he would step down. It was very sad initially but it is an exciting time for me. He's always been a selfless leader.

"He'd be a good poker player, he's been unwavering in his emotions. The way people speak about him, who have played under him, tells you everything you need to know. From the 2015 World Cup to where we are now, the white-ball cricket we've played in recent years all goes back to Morgan, Bayliss and Strauss.

On taking over as captain: "It is important to just be yourself. The way I see cricket is a very positive, attacking way. Trying to score as many as you can as quickly as you can. Being captain will be a good experience for me, learning if there is anything I need to change.

"I'm like everyone, I get nervous but once you've played for a while you can be a bit more relaxed when you're waiting to bat. Then when you go over that white line, you're trying to get yourself in the zone."
