  1. Ind 5-0published at 2 overs

Stuart Broad begins with a no ball, but he then gets the ball to nip back slightly as Cheteshwar Pujara shoulders arms and lets the ball fizz over his off-stump.

His final delivery drifts onto middle and leg, but Pujara's shot goes straight to Jack Leach at mid-wicket.

Stuart Broad, complete with his trusty white bandana, will open at the other end.

I think it was a good toss for Ben Stokes to win. There are clouds overhead, there is a bit of rain around too. There is some grass on the pitch too and against this India top-order, England could put themselves in the ascendency early.

Lovely shot from Gill, that's a beauty. It's a reminder of what a classy player he is. Wristily flicked through straight mid-wicket.

  5. Ind 4-0published at 1 overs

    Shot.

India off the mark thanks to a wonderful drive by Shubman Gill clipped through mid-wicket for four.

That's hurt Billings. It's one of those that just wobbles and it's caught him on the knuckle.

  7. Ind 0-0published at 0.3 overs

There is not much bounce first up for James Anderson and Shubman Gill is watchful outside his off stump.

Sam Bilings fumbles one delivery and winces in pain, looked to have caught him on the edge of the glove.

Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara are applauded by the crowd as they make their way to the middle.

A certain James Anderson will open the bowling for England.

It looks a very good pitch, I had a chat with the groundsman and he explained that he had left the grass at 10mm when for a Test it is usually 6-7mm. The significance of that is that it will negate spin, it should just skid onto the bat.

Jon Hollis: So England are bowling first. Stuart Broad just needs one wicket to be the sixth bowler - and third fast bowler - to reach 550 Test wickets. Meanwhile, Jimmy Anderson can get cracking on knocking off the 150 more wickets he needs to overtake Murali.

Ben: Stokes said he wanted to be like Morgan - welcome to the new era of Tests where we nearly always bowl first and just chase everything and anything in the fourth innings like a one-day game. Love it.

Sun and blue sky is starting to emerge from behind white clouds as the two teams enter the field for the national anthems.

Jimmy Anderson often looks grumpy out on the field so if he is enjoying it, that is really something.

I think it is an alignment between Rob Key, the head coach and the captain. You've then got the likes of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow and if those senior players are going with it, it is easier for the younger players to follow.

  13. All changepublished at 10:21 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

England's defeat at Edgbaston was part of a run of just one win in 17 Tests, but they go into this game buoyant after beating New Zealand 3-0 under new captain Ben Stokes and new coach Brendon McCullum.

The new aggressive approach under Stokes and McCullum yielded instant results, completing remarkable chases of 277, 299 and 296 against the world Test champions.

It's all change for India too, with Virst Kohli having relinquished the captaincy since last summer, though new skipper Rohit Sharma will miss this match having tested positive for Covid last week. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the side in his absence.

  14. Anderson returns for Englandpublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

England have made two changes from the seven-wicket win over New Zealand at Headingley, with pace bowler James Anderson replacing Jamie Overton and wicketkeeper Sam Billings - who was a Covid replacement for Ben Foakes during the third Test - keeping the gloves.

Foakes, who was also not able to keep on day three because of a back injury, has not recovered as well as England would have liked.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Shubman Gill will form a makeshift opening partnership for India in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul.

England XI: Zak Crawley, Alex Lees, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Sam Billings (wk), Matthew Potts, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, James Anderson.

India XI: Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah (c).

India stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah: "It's a good feeling, a massive achievement for me and the biggest privilege in our sport.

"I'm very happy with our preparation, we played a practice game at Leicester and now it's about bringing it into the game.

"Rohit misses out because he's Covid positive and Pujara will open.

"I would've been happy doing either at the toss."

  17. Postpublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

England captain Ben Stokes: "We've done well chasing in recent games but the toss was dictated by the overheads. The pitch looks good and we'll try to put them under some pressure.

"Coming into a new series so quickly after a phenomenal performance against New Zealand but that will give us the opportunity to keep the momentum going. As I've made it quite clear, we'll becoming out with the same attitude towards playing Test match cricket.

"Unfortunately, Foakesy didn't pull up as well as we'd have liked after last week so Sam [Billings] stays in and keeps the gloves. Jamie [Overton] is unfortunate to miss out after his performance, Jimmy is back."

  18. England win the toss and will bowlpublished at 10:03 British Summer Time 1 July 2022

    Why are we here?

Well the fifth Test was originally scheduled to be played at Old Trafford a week after the Oval Test, but it was cancelled hours before it was due to start because of a Covid outbreak in the India camp.

In case you have forgotten, India lead the series 2-1.
