After being square cut for four, Jordan Clark produces a beauty next ball and Josh Davey is caught at third slip by Will Jacks.

He put on 59 with Tom Abell, who is still there on 125 and has now been joined by Jack Leach.

    Frenetic.

Will Rhodes drives Shane Snater down the ground for four, thick-edges the next delivery wide of the slip cordon for another and then needlessly slashes at a wide one and Simon Harmer grabs a good catch above his head.

Not the kind of innings Warwickshire wanted from their captain.

WICKETpublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 22 April 2022

    Kelly c Duke b Thompson 1 (Northants 26-3 v Yorks 296)

Perfect start to the day for Yorkshire.

After one nightwatchman couldn't get the job done last night for Northants - Simon Kerrigan fell first ball - they sent in another.

Matt Kelly did at least get them through to the close but he's fallen in just the second over of the morning.

Jordan Thompson, who plucked out both wickets last night, finds some extra bounce as Kelly tries to pull and gets it straight in the air to the wicketkeeper.

  5. Postpublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 22 April 2022

    Kent 279-7 v Hampshire

That pic of George Linde bowling to Darren Stevens in the nets (see 11:00 entry) was actually taken a few minutes ago.

Stevens is out in the middle now and hits two fours in Kyle Abbott's first over of the day, both whipped away through the leg side. He is 21 not out.

    Sibley c Wheater b Snater 33 (Warwickshire 76-3 v Essex 168)

    What a start by Essex.

First ball of the day from Shane Snater is an absolute jaffa, which leaves Dom Sibley off the pitch and he edges through to the keeper.

One moment you're walking to the middle, the next you're history.

Warwickshire spinner Danny Briggs praised his seam bowling team-mates after they bowled out Essex for 168 on day one at Edgbaston.

"Coming out after lunch with them only two down it could have been a long, hard slog ahead of us, but the seamers all bowled really well, in rhythm," he told BBC WM.

"I was lucky enough to take the most wickets but it could have been any of the guys. It's not a 160 pitch. It's a good wicket, a normal Edgbaston wicket."

The reigning champions will resume their first innings 92 in arrears, with England's Dom Sibley 33 not out.

Lancashire paceman Hassan Ali said it was a proud moment bowling alongside "the great" Jimmy Anderson after taking 6-47 for his new county on day one against Gloucestershire.

"I was nervous about sharing the bowling with Jimmy but he was there to support me and he was backing me," he said.

"I will remember coming off the ground and he was clapping me."

Lancashire will begin day two with a new batter at the crease after George Balderson was run out from the final delivery last evening.

  12. Surrey squad 'has everything' - Clarkpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 22 April 2022

    Surrey v Somerset 283-6 (match resumes 11:00)

    Jordan ClarkImage source, Getty Images

Surrey pace bowler Jordan Clark hailed the "massive talent" within their squad despite being on the receiving end of a century by Somerset skipper Tom Abell on day one at the Oval.

Abell reached 121 not out but Clark said Surrey had bowled with discipline and would be looking to wrap up the remaining wickets quickly on day two.

"I think the squad's got everything," the former Lancashire player told BBC Radio London.

"The team's very reliable at the minute, all the lads are working really hard - it's good to be a part of and I think we can go far."

  13. D'Oliveira in control against Sussexpublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 22 April 2022

Worcestershire 338-5 v Sussex (match resules at 11:00)

    Brett D'OlivieraImage source, Rex Features

Worcestershire skipper Brett D'Oliveira is a player in "complete command of his game" at the moment, according to team-mate Ed Pollock.

D'Oliveira hit an unbeaten 106 on the opening day against Sussex at New Road, his second century of the season.

"Brett D'Oliveira has been amazing to watch. He looks in such control," said Pollock, who made a rapid 77 himself at the start of the innings.

"The position we're in now, it depends how greedy we get, 400, 500, just to keep them out there - and then can we strike early?" he told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"And see where busy Counties strive for fame, each greatly potent at this mighty game."

So said the poet James Love, apparently, but some sides were far less potent than others on the opening day of the current County Championship games when more than 2,500 runs were scored and 86 wickets taken.
