  1. Tea at Chelmsfordpublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Yorks 256-5 v Essex 403

In case any extreme optimists of an Essex persuasion were nurturing hopes of enforcing the follow-on, that possibility has now disappeared.

Harry Brook is looking well set, having opened his account by sweeping Simon Harmer for six and he's just dispatched Sam Cook to the fence twice to secure a second batting bonus point for the White Rose.

Brook is 28 not out, with Dawid Malan unbeaten on 17.

    Salt c Rhodes b McAndrew 26 (Lancashire 296-5, Warwickshire 315)

Aussie signing Nathan McAndrew takes his first wicket for Warwickshire as he bags England one-day international wicket-keeper Phil Salt for 26.

The hosts are slowly edging towards a first-innings lead - but half their batting is gone now.

In the 101st over, maybe Lancs will have to settle for three batting points.

More of a challenge will be denying the Bears a second or even third bowling point as George Balderson comes in to join his skipper Dane Vilas.

A nice moment for McAndrew, who went for 0-100 on his debut against Somerset at Taunton last week.

WICKETpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Zaib lbw b Overton 8 (Northants 194 & 101-5 v Surrey 401)

That's unplayable! A fast inswinging yorker by Jamie Overton hits Saif Zaib on the foot and the left-hander loses his balance and topples over in the crease as the umpire's finger goes up.

Northamptonshire are five down now, still 106 behind - and Surrey must surely be thinking about the prospect of a day off tomorrow.

    Durham 580-6 dec &11-0, Worcestershire 309

Time. It was the only way Worcestershire could hurt Durham’s push for a win. And their lower order did a fine job, helping to eke out a third batting point.

Following the loss of ex-skipper Joe Leach for 62 second ball after lunch debutant Ben Gibbon had more adhesion than a sticky-tape factory.

He soaked up almost an hour for his nine runs, while Adam Finch lasted 80 minutes for his 22 not out.

And Josh Baker helped the cause earlier too with 27 that lasted 69 minutes - including one boundary from the five balls he faced off Ben Stokes. A little bit of payback then!

And now Durham have opted not to enforced the follow-on and are batting again. Maybe Stokes thinks he needs a bit more batting practice and was only just warming up yesterday?

  5. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Root b Critchley 75 (Yorks 215-5 v Essex 403)

There's to be no century for Joe Root, who chops Matt Critchley onto his stumps.

Critchley has suddenly given Essex a sniff of potentially bowling their visitors out, with that smart piece of fielding to run out Matthew Revis and now picking up the prize scalp of Root soon afterwards.

With that said, the in-form Harry Brook is now at the wicket alongside Dawid Malan.

  6. wicket

HAMPSHIRE ALL OUT FOR 204published at 15:09 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Hampshire 342 & 204, Gloucestershire 179

Just a ball after bringing up a 100-run partnership with James Fuller, Aneurin Donald is out for 89.

Donald looks a little bemused as he played a head-high shot at a ball he thought should have been called a no ball.

The hosts are all out for 204, having almost doubled their score from 103-9. Fuller was the not-out man on 32, from 85 balls.

Gloucestershire will need 368 to win. And they have a day and a half to do it. But they will need to bat a lot better than first time round.

  7. wicket

WICKETpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Revis run out 47 (Yorks 205-4 v Essex 403)

Matthew Revis seemed nailed on for his second half-century in successive matches, but he falls to an excellent piece of fielding by Matt Critchley at midwicket.

Revis pushed the ball to Critchley's right and set off, but Joe Root sent him back as the fielder dived full length and returned the ball for Adam Rossington to take off the bails.

Excellent knock by Revis, though - he and Root had added 124 for the fourth wicket. Dawid Malan comes in to join Root - something we got used to saying after a few overs of an England innings last winter!

  8. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:56 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Gay c Foakes b Atkinson 51 (Northants 194 & 86-4 v Surrey 401)

Big wicket for Surrey - and it's Gus Atkinson who gets it.

Emilio Gay batted bravely for 51, but he eventually feathers one outside off stump and Ben Foakes pouches his third catch of this second innings.

Northamptonshire are staring down the barrel here, with 121 still needed to make Surrey bat again.

  9. wicket

WORCESTERSHIRE ALL OUT FOR 309published at 14:54 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Durham 580-6 dec, Worcestershire 309

After a brave 29-run stand with Adam Finch, and an encouraging stay of 58 minutes at the crease, Worcestershire debutant Ben Gibbon is finally out, bowled by Chris Rushworth.

The Pears trail by 271 runs but will not be required to follow on!

    Jennings c Hain b Hannon-Dalby 110 (Lancashire 256-4, Warwickshire 315)

The Warwickshire afternoon fightback speeds up as Oliver Hannon-Dalby claims his second wicket. And it's the big one too.

    Centurion Keaton Jennings, for 110.

Phil Salt comes in to join skipper Dane Vilas.

Three wickets gone now for just 15 runs inside seven overs - two of them for the prolific OHD.

  11. Hampshire last pair plough onpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Hampshire 342 & 189-9, Gloucestershire 179

The Hampshire lead climbs to 352 as this last-wicket stand climbs to 86.

Aneurin Donald has moved on to 80. James Fuller is on 30.

How nice would it be to see Donald go on and make a ton, in this comeback innings after more than two years out with terrible knee trouble.

    Northants 194 & 83-3 v Surrey 401

A battling effort by Emilio Gay, who's really been in the wars today but has now progressed to his half-century off 56 balls with a boundary off Colin de Grandhomme.

Gay has dominated this Northamptonshire second innings so far, despite being hit by a series of deliveries that spat off the surface.

It's the left-hander's fourth first-class 50 and his second of the season.

  13. wicket

    Croft c Benjamin b Miles 0 (Lancashire 246-3, Warwickshire 315)

Warwickshire strike again as the new ball also accounts for Steven Croft.

The former Lancashire captain has gone for a 13-ball duck, well caught low down in the gully by Chris Benjamin.

Half-century for Joe Rootpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Yorks 173-3 v Essex 403

Joe Root (Yorkshire)Image source, Rex Features

It's his first innings of the summer - and Joe Root has marked it with a half-century.

The ex-England captain nudges Simon Harmer for a couple behind square to get there from 88 balls and Yorkshire have advanced to 173-3.

Matthew Revis is looking in good touch at the other end, on 34 not out, and Essex are scratching heads as they ponder how to break this partnership.

  15. Post-lunch nap time at New Road?published at 14:28 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Worcestershire 291-9, Durham 580-6 dec

Worcestershire's last pair Adam Finch and Ben Gibbon are battling well at New Road.

The last run off the bat was at 1.52.

Still another 140 needed to avoid being asked to bat again by Durham - but it's still a worthy effort. Even if low on entertainment value.

Contrast that with what was going off this time yesterday!

  16. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Procter c S Curran b Atkinson 9 (Northants 194 & 61-3 v Surrey 401)

Surrey couldn't get Luke Procter out first time around - but Gus Atkinson has done it now with his second ball!

He tempts Procter to pull and the ball soars up towards the boundary, where Sam Curran judges the catch perfectly.

Rob Keogh comes out to join Emilio Gay, with Northants still 146 behind.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Bohannon c Yates b Hannon-Dalby 23 (Lancashire 241-2, Warwickshire 315)

Oliver Hannon-Dalby strikes in his third over with the new ball as he removes Josh Bohannon, well caught low to his left low down at slip by Rob Yates

The hosts still trail by 74 as Steven Croft comes to the wicket.

  18. Postpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Northants 194 & 45-2 v Surrey 401

Emilio Gay is going to be sporting one or two bruises tomorrow, you'd think.

The Northamptonshire left-hander was struck twice on the elbow by rising deliveries from Jordan Clark just before lunch and he's taken another knock - this time on the other arm - from Colin de Grandhomme.

Despite those knocks, Gay looks in defiant mood - he's hit six boundaries in his 33 not out so far, nudging Northants to 45-2 after losing both openers early. Still 162 needed to make Surrey bat again, though.

Century for Keaton Jenningspublished at 13:58 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Lancashire 230-1, Warwickshire 315

Back-to-back County Championship centuries for Keaton Jennings, 10 months apart.

It's the South Africa-born England opener's 21st first-class century, having also reached three figures in the Roses Match against Yorkshire at Headingley last July.

Since then he has suffered two calf injuries.

The first perhaps crucially ruled him out of Lancashire's title challenge when the Championship resumed last September - and it was Warwickshire who came through to win.

Jennings then did his other calf in pre-season, ruling him out of Lancashire's opening three games this summer. But he has now taken his chance to show the Bears just what he was capable of.

It's his sixth ton for Lancashire - but only his third at Old Trafford.

  20. Back underway in Manchesterpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Lancashire 221-1, Warwickshire 315

Lancashire resume after lunch, trailing now by only 96.

But the new ball is only two overs away.

Regardless of the overs left in the day, tea will now be at 4 o'clock. Bob on. Very civilised.
