  1. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:59 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Wells c & b Briggs 80 (Lancashire 166-1, Warwickshire 315)

Lancashire lose their first wicket as spin does the trick.

Luke Wells returns a catch to Danny Briggs on 80.

A good effort from Briggs, who has to dive low to his right to claim a fiercely struck drive from the left-hander.

New man in is England candidate Josh Bohannon, to join Keaton Jennings, who is on 63.

  2. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Northants 194 & 0-0 v Surrey 401

Covers are on at The Oval as well - giving the Northamptonshire openers a little more time to strap on their pads.

When play resumes, they'll be heading out to the middle again as Surrey - unsurprisingly - have decided to enforce the follow-on.

  3. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Brown c Bracey b Goodman 18 (Hampshire 65-7 v Gloucestershire)

Another catch for James Bracey, his sixth of the match, as he snaffles opposite number Ben Brown - allowing Dom Goodman to get in on the wicket taking action.

  4. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Yorks 115-3 v Essex 403

Joe Root's rhythm is interrupted now by a spot of rain at Chelmsford, where the covers are on.

Root has hit 21 not out so far, including three boundaries and he and Matthew Revis have moved the total on to 115-3. Hopefully only a brief stoppage...

  5. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Sanderson c Amla b de Grandhomme 4 (Northants 194 all out v Surrey 401)

All over for Northamptonshire - and they narrowly miss out on a batting point as Ben Sanderson takes on Colin de Grandhomme and miscues to mid-on, where Hashim Amla takes a routine catch.

Poor old Luke Procter is left high and dry on 83 not out and De Grandhomme finishes with figures of 4-39.

The question now is - do Surrey send the visitors in again? You'd think so, with a 207-run deficit and the fact their bowlers haven't been out there all that long this morning.

  6. Nice touch from Ben Stokespublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Worcestershire 211-7, Durham 580-6 dec

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

It's a beautiful sunny day in Worcester today and warm. But, after Ben Stokes' fireworks yesterday I am expecting a more sedate affair.

Poor Josh Baker took the brunt of Stokes' English record 17 sixes in his brutal innings. The 18-year-old spinner went for five sixes and a four in one over.

Stokes told me last night he knows what it's like to be on the receiving end of such treatment. Anyone remember Carlos Brathwaite's four straight sixes off Stokes to win the T20 World Cup final six years ago?

Anyway it transpires that Stokes texted Josh last night to make sure he was OK, which is a nice touch from the England skipper.

One early wicket to report after Ben Cox, on 21, became Matty Potts' sixth victim. Potts needs one more wicket to be sure of posting a first-class career-best.

  7. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Kerrigan lbw b de Grandhomme 12 (Northants 178-9 v Surrey 401)

Colin de Grandhomme makes the first breakthrough of the morning for Surrey, getting the ball to swing and pinning Simon Kerrigan in front of his stumps.

Luke Procter is still there on 71, but now it's up to last man Ben Sanderson to help him shepherd the visitors towards a batting bonus point. The follow-on target is still 74 away...

  8. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Gubbins c Bracey b Higgins 13 (Hampshire 45-6 v Gloucestershire)

Another wicket for Ryan Higgins. Another catch for James Bracey.

Nick Gubbins becomes the latest Hampshire man to perish.

Figures of 2-12 for Higgins this morning, 3-18 in the innings - and five wickets in the match, all caught by Bracey.

Ben Brown is the new man in, to join Liam Dawson.

Hampshire lead by 208 but with only four wickets remaining now.

  9. 50 runs

Half century for Keaton Jenningspublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Lancashire 143-0, Warwickshire 315

Nice start to the day for fit-again Keaton Jennings as he reaches his 50 in his first appearance since the Roses Match last July.

He went on to hit 132 in that game at Headingley - a badly rain-affected draw.

Do not bet against him going past three figures again.

And Luke Wells is even close to that target. Already on to 74.

  10. Root returns to the creasepublished at 11:13 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Yorks 86-3 v Essex 403

    Joe Root (Yorkshire)Image source, Rex

Here's a sight we haven't seen in a while - Joe Root bounding out to bat for Yorkshire!

The former England captain is at the crease alongside nightwatchman Matthew Revis and gets under way by cracking Sam Cook for four on the leg side.

Plenty of work for Root and his team-mates to do as Yorkshire reply to this sizeable Essex total of 403.

  11. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

    Vince c Bracey b Higgins 15 (Hampshire 32-5 v Gloucestershire)

First wicket of the day goes down in Southampton as Ryan Higgins makes an early day three breakthrough.

Hampshire skipper James Vince is gone for 15, caught behind by James Bracey

It's a fourth wicket in the match for the irrepressible Higgins - and all four have been caught behind.

A bad start to the second innings for Hampshire, who had the option to make Gloucestershire follow on last night. But they are still 196 ahead. And the way wickets have started tumbling in this match, that's still already a sizeable lead

  12. Stokes and his sixespublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

There was plenty of encouraging news on the England front yesterday with Ollie Robinson in the wickets for Sussex.

And there is the prospect of seeing former England captain Joe Root, held back by a nightwatchman last night, bat for Yorkshire against Essex at Chelmsford today.

But the only place to be yesterday morning was at New Road to see Root's successor as Test captain, Ben Stokes.

The new England captain brutally welted 161 off 88 balls for Durham, featuring a new County Championship record 17 sixes - five of which came in one 34-run over (6-6-6-6-6-4) from helpless spinner Josh Baker, when Stokes' attempt to become the first Englishman to hit six sixes in an over in English first-class cricket fell just a couple of yards short.

Perhaps the best of all the many, many Stokes-related stats on offer was him almost matching John Morris's 'most Durham sixes in a season' county record of 18 - in the space of just one morning.

He hit 15 in that first session, saved two for after lunch and then holed out off home skipper Brett D'Oliveira trying to equal it.

An innings that will live long in the memory of those at New Road to witness it, which unfortunately did not include the many national cricket writers who had rolled up to watch him bat on day one, but who were elsewhere yesterday.

    The locals enjoyed it though.

  14. Good morning and welcomepublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 7 May 2022

Welcome everyone to day three in the latest round of County Championship matches.

The sun's out. It looks a lovely day ahead. And all seven games - four in Division One and three in Division Two - look nicely poised.

But, after Ben Stokes' extraordinary efforts yesterday, just how do you follow that?
