  1. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:38 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Benjamin c Jacks b McKerr 7 (Surrey v Warwicks 65-2)

Well, they didn't get Dom Sibley - but Surrey have removed Chris Benjamin, playing what might be called an 'ordinary' shot.

Conor McKerr, who's only just taken his place on the field after arriving to replace the injured Dan Worrall, takes the wicket, with Will Jacks collecting a straightforward slip catch.

  2. dropped catch

Dropped catch at the Ovalpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Surrey v Warwicks 61-1

Surrey-bound Dom Sibley has just been given a life by his future team-mates - not intentionally, we hasten to add.

Tom Lawes, who's taken the only wicket to fall so far, should have added another after persuading Sibley to edge to third slip - but Ryan Patel shells a routine chance.

  3. rain stops play

Rain at Scarboroughpublished at 12:35 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Yorkshire 33-6 v Hampshire

A heavy downpour at North Marine Road, Scarborough as the predicted BBC weather forecast proves spot on.

New Yorkshire batter Dom Bess had barely time to make it out to the middle before he was forced to seek sanctuary back in the pavilion.

That will surely end play for the morning session as the Scarborough spectators (including Sir Geoffrey Boycott, who is there for a book signing) also run for cover.

  4. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Du Plooy c Baker b Barnard 38 (Worcs v Derbys 53-6)

Something of a mini-revival for Derbyshire, led by Leus du Plooy, is brought to an end as the skipper is caught in the slips off Ed Barnard.

Du Plooy and Anuj Dal had added 39 after that gruesome start for the visitors at New Road, with Dillon Pennington grabbing four wickets.

  5. wicket

    WICKET - Revis c Holland b Abbott 8published at 12:32 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Yorkshire 33-6 v Hampshire

    Oh Eck!!!

A sixth wicket of the morning at Scarborough as Matthew Revis pays for attempting one attacking shot too many.

Just a ball after hitting the first boundary in front of the wicket in an hour and 20 minutes, he is caught by Ian Holland at fourth slip.

A second wicket for Kyle Abbott. But, hang on . . . relief is in sight for the Tykes . . .

  6. ouch!

Postpublished at 12:28 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Surrey v Warwicks 56-1

Jamie Overton is writhing around on the ground after narrowly failing to take his second catch of the morning, again off Tom Lawes.

Lawes found the edge of Chris Benjamin's bat and the ball dropped fractionally short of Overton at first slip, jamming his finger against the turf.

The physio is on, but it looks as though Overton should be fine to resume - which is just as well for Surrey after Dan Worrall was ruled out by a shoulder injury just before the start. Conor McKerr is in to replace him.

  7. 50 runs

Half-century stand for Cook and Brownepublished at 12:27 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Essex 51-0 v Somerset

Nick Browne on 23, Alastair Cook on 21.

The Essex openers are going well.

Somerset have now used five bowlers, Craig Overton and Peter Siddle, Kasey Aldridge and Lewis Gregory, and now England spinner Jack Leach, in their attempt to make a breakthrough.

  8. wicket

    WICKET - Waite c Weatherley b Abbott 4published at 12:15 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Yorkshire 25-5 v Hampshire

Another one gone. Kyle Abbott gets in on the act.

Matthew Waite, shaken up after being hit by the ball before, is caught at third slip.

Yorkshire are in a right mess here.

Obviously, you can't judge any game of four-day cricket on what's gone off on the first morning. But, right now, Yorkshire's decision to bat first does not look a good one.

    Next man is Matthew Revis.

  9. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:15 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Davies c Overton b Lawes 23 (Surrey v Warwicks 52-1)

It's teenager Tom Lawes who strikes for Surrey with his second ball!

Lawes gets the ball to move away from Alex Davies and the edge goes straight into the hands of Jamie Overton at first slip.

Chris Benjamin heads out to join Dom Sibley at the wicket.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    O Price b Sales 23 (Glos 61-2 v Northants)

Ollie Price, who scored a half-century on this ground against Hampshire last week, was looking a good bet for another today.

But James Sales has other ideas - the young Northants seamer tempts Price outside off stump and he drags on to end a partnership of exactly 50 with Chris Dent.

Miles Hammond is the new man at the crease for Gloucestershire.

  11. Postpublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Surrey v Warwicks 36-0

Still no joy for the league leaders, who must have been confident of early inroads against a Warwickshire team sliding down the table.

But it's so far, so good for the Bears, with Alex Davies and Dom Sibley advancing to 36 without loss in the first hour.

  12. wicket

    WICKET - Tattersall b Abbas 6published at 11:58 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Yorkshire 20-4 v Hampshire

    Worse news for Yorkshire fans.

Another one bites the dust. Jonny Tattersall.

Mohammad Abbas nips one back off a length, Tattersall offers no stroke and it embarrassingly clatters into the timbers.

Abbas now has figures of 7-3-7-3. Reads almost like a golf scorecard.

And Keith Barker (7-2-11-1) has been pretty tidy too.

The pair have so bowled unchanged in ideal bowling conditions, although Kyle Abbott is now at least going to get a go.

The new man at the crease is Matthew Waite.

  14. Postpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Glos 25-1 v Northants

Gloucestershire are ticking along, not all that quickly, at Cheltenham after the early loss of Marcus Harris.

Chris Dent has scored eight, while Ollie Price has seven - including an all-run four off Jack White, not something you see all that often at a county outground!

  15. All calm in Chelmsfordpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Essex 28-0 (10 overs) v Somerset

    10 overs gone at Chelmsford.

    Not much to report.

Essex openers Nick Browne and Alastair Cook going well.

Peter Siddle took a breather after four overs, allowing Kasey Aldridge into the attack - and the right armer starts with a maiden.

Interesting festive test this for Aldridge, who was born on Christmas Eve, bowling to Cook, who was born on Christmas Day.

  16. POTTS RETURNS FOR DURHAMpublished at 11:38 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Durham 9-0 v Middlesex

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

The build-up to this one was about the long-awaited return of Durham batsman Sean Dickson.

He hasn't played since Durham picked up their only County Championship win this season, against Glamorgan in May. But he didn't appear on the team sheet, which has surprised a few of us.

Durham were obviously keeping their powder dry about another player too, England fast bowler Matty Potts, who is playing in his first game for the club since that Glamorgan win.

By contrast, he wasn't in the squad of 13 but I gather Durham were told by the ECB over the weekend that he could play in this one.

England opener Alex Lees is out in the middle with Michael Jones, who is due to join the Scotland one-day squad later in the week. It's muggy and they are playing on a green top. So these are decent conditions for the bowlers to try and exploit.

Fair to say it's been a profitable morning for Dillon Pennington at New Road.

The Worcestershire seamer picks up his third and fourth wickets in the same over, having Luis Reece caught behind for one and Hilton Cartwright follows in the same manner without scoring.

Derbyshire are in desperate trouble at 14-5.

  18. wicket

    WICKET - Kohler-Cadmore lbw b Abbas 6published at 11:32 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Yorkshire 8-3 v Hampshire

Yorkshire's nightmare start gets worse as Hampshire get a third wicket.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore is the next to go, leg before wicket, to earn Mohammad Abbas his second wicket.

"A little bit high", suggest the commentary team.

New man in is Jonny Tattersall as what's left of Yorkshire's batting attempt to prove it was a wise decison to choose to bat first, after all.

  19. Postpublished at 11:31 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Surrey v Warwicks 13-0

Solid start by the Warwickshire openers, who are coping well so far with the favourable bowling conditions in south London.

Alex Davies has just struck the first boundary of the match, clipping Jordan Clark's half-volley through midwicket and he has seven, while Dom Sibley is on five.

  20. Postpublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 25 July 2022

    Yorkshire 8-2 (5 overs) v Hampshire

Yorkshire pair Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Will Fraine are trying to recover from their nightmare start at North Marine Road.

Left-armer Keith Barker, a title winner with Warwickshire in 2011, and Pakistan international Mohammad Abbas removed openers George Hill and Adam Lyth inside the first nine balls.
