Kyle Abbott's 10-wicket match haul left Hampshire chasing 214 for victory at Scarborough after they dismissed Yorkshire for 272 in their second innings.
Abbott (4-77) and Mohammad Abbas (3-37 led the Hampshire charge, despite Jonny Tattersall's 63 for the White Rose and the visitors, who reached 9-0 at stumps, will need another 205 on the final day.
League leaders Surrey endured a frustrating day against Warwickshire at the Oval, despite taking two early wickets to reduce the visitors to 7-2.
Only two more wickets fell during the day, with Sam Hain (87) and Will Rhodes (72) sharing an unbroken partnership of 127 to steer the Bears to 270-4, a lead of 207.
Josh Bohannon struck his second century in as many games to guide Lancashire to a lead of 252 at stumps against Kent at Old Trafford.
Bohannon's 134 was backed up by Luke Wells (98) and Rob Jones, who hit an unbeaten 53 as the home side fought back on the third day to reach 377-5.
Matt Renshaw registered his highest Championship score of 146 as Somerset reached 359-3 at Chelmsford, replying to Essex's 505-9 declared.
Renshaw was supported by skipper Tom Abell, who was forced to retire hurt on 90 after damaging his left hamstring.
But fellow West Country strugglers Gloucestershire look destined for another defeat at Cheltenham after limping to 135-5 in their second innings, still 27 short of making Northamptonshire bat again.
James Sales hit a career-best 71 as Northants' last three wickets added another 126 to their overnight tally to post 479 all out and, despite 62 from Marcus Harris, the home side are struggling to wipe off their 162 deficit.
Derbyshire look favourites to overcome Worcestershire at New Road, after Anuj Dal's unbeaten 112 enabled them to set their hosts 289 for victory.
Ben Aitchison's three wickets left the Pears in trouble at 72-5, although they recovered to 108-5 at stumps.
John Simpson's undefeated 132 hauled Middlesex out of trouble against Durham at the Riverside to close on 417-7, just four runs behind the home side's 421-7 declared. A draw is the most likely outcome tomorrow.
Leaders Nottinghamshire hold a commanding advantage of 381 over Sussex going into day three at Trent Bridge, with Haseeb Hameed (94) top-scoring as the home side reached 284-7 in their second innings.

Surrey bowling coach Azhar Mahmood on Jamie Overton's foot injury against Warwickshire.
“Jamie Overton has been icing his foot all day," said Mahmood. "He is under observation at the moment.
"He may go for a scan tomorrow morning, but we will see how he is after tonight.
“It was obviously a big blow for us being a bowler down, but the rest of the boys stuck at it well and sometimes you have to give credit to the opposition."
Lancashire 145 & 377-5, Kent 270
Lancashire close 252 ahead. What a turnaround for a side who simply had to win this game to keep their title hopes alive.
Lancashire 145 & 377-5, Kent 270
Rob Jones' half-century. Only his second of the season
Good way to bounce back after a first-innings first-baller.
Yorkshire 159 & 272, Hampshire 218 & 9-0 (3 overs), chasing 214 to win
Title-chasing Hampshire see out three overs safely to close on 9-0 against Yorkshire at Scarborough.
After bowling out Yorkshire for 272, the visitors did not lose a wicket - but they did not look entirely comfortable, againat a Tykes attack revitalised by the return of fit-again Ben Coad.
They will now resume in the morning needing a further 205 to claim an eighth win in 11 games and keep up the pressure on leaders Surrey, who look far from sure to beat reigning champions Warwickshire.
Lancashire 145 & 369-5, Kent 270
After 90 runs and four catches in the match, Yorkshireman Jack Leaning gets in on the act with a wicket too - Washington Sundar.
Essex 505-9 dec, Somerset 359-3
Somerset head coach Jason Kerr says they are yet to find the full extent of skipper Tom Abell's hamstring injury.
"It is pretty sore," he said. "We are looking to get a scan as quickly as possible, probably Friday back in Taunton.
"The first 24 hours will give us some information but hopefully it is not too serious and is just a tweak.
"He is in the form of his life coming off the back of a century last week and was looking like getting another one so hopefully he is not out for too long."
Glos 317 & 135-5 v Northants 479
Sadly, that's it for the day at Cheltenham - but Northamptonshire will be confident of securing their second victory of the season on the final day.
They need five more wickets, while Gloucestershire are still 27 short of forcing the visitors to bat again.
Patterson c Weatherley b Fuller 11 (Yorkshire 159 & 272, Hampshire 218)

That sets Hampshire a vicfory target of 214 to win.
Three potentially awkward overs to face tonight for Felix Organ and Ian Holland.
Ben Coad to bowl the first of them . . .

Lancashire 145 & 353-4, Kent 270
Kent finally nail Josh Bohannon as Ollie Robinson has him caught beihnd off Grant Stewart for 134.
But his second successive second-innings century may already have had a telling effect on this game.
Lancs already lead by 228 as Washington Sundar comes out with nine overs left on this extended day.
Durham 421-7 dec, Middlesex 390-7 (109 overs)
Martin Emmerson
BBC Radio Newcastle
John Simpson has batted nicely for his hundred- and has held things in place for Middlesex as they do their best to set up a game with Durham with a day to go.
It's the first time he's scored three centuries in a season and it is his first against Durham.
It's the 17th century by a Middlesex player in a County Championship match against Durham.
On a good batting track, Durham's Michael Jones made 206, while Scott Borthwick and David Bedingham got half centuries. But Simpson is the only Middlesex player to have passed 50.
Yorkshire 159 & 241-9, Hampshire 218
Kyle Abbott rips out both Jordan Thompson and Matthew Revis in the space of three balls at Scarborough - both of them caught behind by Ben Brown.
10 wickets in the match now for Abbott, after his 6-36 in the first innings. And BBC's Radio Solent Kevan James reckons he has bowled even better this time round.
Ben Coad comes in to join Steve Patterson and see if they can add to their 182-run lead.
Still 10 overs left tonight, in decent light too.

Surrey 316 v Warwicks 253 & 270-4
OK, that earlier optimism proved to be unfounded.
The light hasn't improved in south London and the umpires don't think it will - but this is set up for an intriguing final day's play.
Warwickshire lead by 207 with six wickets standing - can they or Surrey force victory? We'll find out tomorrow.
Worcs 108-5 (target 289) v Derbys
They'll have to come back and finish this one off in the morning, with play now abandoned for the day at New Road.
Worcestershire will resume needing another 181 for victory, while Derbyshire are seeking those last five wickets.
Essex 505-9 dec, Somerset 359-3
Another forgettable day at Chelmsford.
Except for Somerset centurion Matt Renshaw, who made 146, and skipper Tom Abell, who did not make a century.
He injured his hamstring going for a second run - and had to retire hurt on 90.
Lewis Goldsworthy (34) and James Rew (22) saw it out to the close to end day three on 359-3 in a hame that has been destined for a draw pretty much from minute one.
Yorkshire 159 & 229-7, Hampshire 218
Yorkshire lose their seventh wicket with their lead having now grown to 170.
Dom Bess is removed by Kyle Abbott for the second time in the match, this time leg before wicket.

Surrey 316 v Warwicks 253 & 270-4
The umpires have been talking it about for the last couple of overs and they've finally decided the conditions are too gloomy for play to continue.
Warwickshire won't be at all gloomy, however. They now lead Surrey by 207 thanks to this partnership between Sam Hain, who is 87 not out, and Will Rhodes (72 not out).
Seven overs left to be bowled - and the umpires have remained in the middle, so don't give up on further play tonight just yet.
